Chapter 8 - The Shadow Reckoning

Over the next three months, winter gave way to the early thaw of an Illinois spring.

While Elena rested at the townhouse under Daniel Hayes's constant medical supervision, Adrian dismantled the corrupt underbelly of his late father's corporate syndicate.

He transferred seventy percent of the holding company's private assets into an independent charitable foundation managed by regional healthcare advocates.

He dissolved the private enforcement wing that his father had used to intimidate competitors, replacing the old guard with transparent corporate oversight.

In late April, news broke across the Midwest financial networks that Victor Sterling had been arrested at O’Hare International Airport while trying to board a private flight to Panama.

The forensic audit Adrian had submitted to the Department of Justice had revealed twelve million dollars in illicit foreign kickbacks and corporate wire fraud spanning seven years.

Adrian sat on the back patio of the Lakeview townhouse, listening to the news update through an earpiece while peeling fresh oranges for Elena.

He felt no joy in Victor's downfall, only a profound sense of relief that the poison had finally been purged from their lives.

Elena walked out onto the stone patio, now twenty-six weeks pregnant and glowing with radiant maternal health.

Her belly was round and prominent beneath a soft sage-green maternity dress, her face full of the peace that had been stolen from her months earlier.

"You're working again," she said with a teasing scowl, nodding toward his tablet on the wicker table.

"I'm looking at nursery wallpaper," Adrian defended himself, holding up the screen to show twenty different patterns of cartoon woodland creatures.

Elena laughed, a rich, warm sound that filled the flowering garden with genuine joy.

She sat down beside him on the wide bench, leaning her head comfortably against his broad shoulder.

"You're ridiculous, Adrian Mercer. The most ruthless investor in Chicago is currently obsessing over baby hedgehogs."

"Hedgehogs are resilient," Adrian said, wrapping his arm around her back and resting his wide palm against her side.

Underneath his hand, a sharp, sudden kick rippled across her belly, followed instantly by a second, lighter tap an inch away.

Adrian gasped, freezing in place as he felt his children moving inside her for the very first time.

"They agree with you," Elena whispered, smiling through joyful tears as she covered his large hand with her own.

"That's Noah on the left. And Maya on the right. They're making sure their father knows they're awake."
