Chapter 1 - The Broken Altar

Adrian stood in the quiet corner of the West Side shelter, his heavy coat hanging loose over Elena’s trembling shoulders.
The scent of damp wool, rain, and clean lavender clung between them, a familiar ghost from the life they had built together. Elena looked up at him, her dark eyes brimming with unshed tears, searching his face for the cruelty she had grown used to.
"Because you're pregnant?" Elena repeated, her voice barely rising above a whisper.
"No," Adrian said, his voice cracking beneath the weight of absolute regret. "Because the second that door clicked shut in Daniel’s office, I realized I had burned down my entire world just to protect my pride."
Elena pulled the coat tighter around her slender frame, her hands resting instinctively over her lower abdomen.
"You didn't just burn down a world, Adrian. You burned down the only person who would have stood between you and a bullet."
"Who was he, Elena?" Adrian asked softly, keeping his hands open and down, refusing to show the towering menace that had made him feared across the city.
"His name is Julian Vance," she whispered, turning her gaze toward the small wooden cross on the shelter wall.
"Vance was my brother's unit commander before David died in the overseas crash six years ago. He reached out to me because he found David's lost personal effects in an army depot in Indiana."
Adrian froze, the blood draining from his face until his skin felt like carved granite.
David had been Elena’s younger brother, the sweet kid who used to send them postcards from training camps before dying in a tragic transport accident. Adrian had helped arrange the funeral back when he and Elena were just dating, watching her cry into his chest for three sleepless nights.
"The hotel lobby," Adrian managed to say, the room tilting violently beneath his polished leather shoes.

"Julian was passing through Chicago on a four-hour layover to hand me David’s military watch and his final letter," Elena said, a single tear cutting through her pale cheek.
"I walked into that hotel to get my dead brother's watch, Adrian. And you hired investigators who took photographs and decided I was selling you out to your enemies."
