Chapter 2 - The Architecture Of A Lie

Adrian felt the words strike his chest like hollow-point rounds, shattering every defense he had built across a decade of corporate warfare.

He had never verified the background of the man in the photograph. He had received the file from his head of personal security, Victor Sterling, accompanied by a forged memo claiming the stranger was an undercover federal agent digging into Mercer holdings.

"Who gave you the picture, Adrian?" Elena asked, her voice hollow and devoid of anger, which frightened him more than screaming ever could.

"Victor," Adrian admitted, feeling a cold, predatory rage begin to awaken beneath his sorrow.

"Victor has been whispering in your ear since the day we got married," she said, looking down at her hands. "He always told you that love makes a man sloppy. He told you that anyone close to you is an open flank."

"I let him poison my mind because I was terrified of losing what we had," Adrian said, stepping forward, his heart pounding in his throat.

"Please let me take you back to Daniel. You nearly collapsed this morning, Elena. You're carrying twins, and you haven't rested in weeks."

Elena shook her head slowly, stepping backward out of his shadow until her back touched the shelter's worn brick wall.

"I am not going to your fortress, Adrian. You signed the decree. By tomorrow morning, the judge will enter the judgment into the county docket."

"I will tear it to pieces in front of the judge," Adrian said desperately, reaching out a hand he didn't dare press against her skin.

"Paper can be torn," she replied, her voice breaking on the final syllable. "A broken heart cannot be glued together with an apology, no matter how much money you throw at the shards."

Before Adrian could speak again, the shelter's side door clicked open, and an elderly volunteer walked in carrying two cardboard boxes of canned soup.

Elena quickly wiped her face, stepped around Adrian without looking at him, and took one of the heavy boxes from the old woman’s arms.

"Don't lift that," Adrian commanded instinctively, rushing forward to take the weight from her.

"Do not order me around anymore, Mr. Mercer," Elena whispered fiercely, her eyes blazing with sudden fire. "You traded your right to protect me thirty minutes ago when you capped your pen."
