Chapter 8 - The Unexpected Visitor

Six months after the wedding disaster, my business was thriving beyond my wildest projections. The commercial property my parents had surrendered was now fully renovated into our new R&D laboratory, and my engineering team had just secured a major multi-year contract with a leading international aerospace cargo carrier.
I was reviewing stress-test simulations on my dual monitors when my executive assistant buzzed through the intercom.
""Fallon, there's someone in the lobby to see you,"" she said, her voice sounding slightly hesitant. ""He insists it's urgent, and he has a delivery for you.""
""Did he leave a name?"" I asked, not looking away from my CAD models.
""He says his name is Alden. Sutton's ex-fiancé.""
I froze. My fingers hovered over the keyboard.
I hadn't spoken to Alden since the night of the rehearsal dinner when he dropped his platinum ring onto the lobby floor and walked out on my family. After everything that had happened, my mind had completely pushed him out of the picture, assuming he had returned to his own high-society circles overseas.
""Send him up,"" I said after a brief pause. ""Let's see what he wants.""
A few minutes later, the frosted glass door of my office opened. Alden stepped inside. He looked different—older, perhaps more grounded, wearing a simple navy blazer without the stiff corporate formality he used to wear around my family. In his hands, he carried a small, heavy wooden box.
""Hello, Fallon,"" Alden said, his voice quiet and respectful. ""I hope I'm not interrupting anything critical.""
""Not at all, Alden,"" I said, gesturing to the chair opposite my desk. ""Though I admit, I didn't expect to ever see you again after the resort incident. How are things on your end?""
He took a seat, setting the wooden box gently on the edge of my desk.
""The annulment was finalized last month,"" Alden said evenly. ""As for Sutton and her parents... they're completely ostracized from our social circles. Althia and Stellin's real estate holdings were liquidated to pay off the legal debts and the court-ordered restitution to your business account. They're living in a small apartment across state lines now. Sutton tried to reach out to me twice, but my lawyers blocked her numbers permanently.""

I nodded slowly, feeling a profound sense of closure rather than satisfaction. ""And why are you here, Alden?""
He tapped the wooden box with his index finger. ""Because on the night of the rehearsal, before everything exploded, I watched you stand up to my family, your family, and every toxic expectation placed on your shoulders. You didn't break when they tried to destroy you. You rebuilt yourself stronger. And before I left the resort that night, I picked something up off the floor that belonged to you—something your mother tried to throw away in the lobby trash.""
