Chapter 10 - The Horizon Clears

Six months after Alden's visit, the autumn leaves outside my office window turned a brilliant amber and gold. The engineering firm had just been awarded the primary structural safety contract for the city's new international transit terminal—the largest project of my career.
My leg was fully healed, the carbon-fiber sleeve long since discarded for normal, unhindered movement. Every step I took across the polished concrete floor of our expanded testing facility was firm, balanced, and completely my own.
Vesper walked into my office carrying two glasses of sparkling cider and a crisp, freshly printed contract.
""The final signatures for the transit terminal are locked in,"" Vesper announced, handing me the document with a triumphant grin. ""You are officially heading the largest infrastructure project in the state, Fallon.""
I signed the document with the heavy metal-weighted fountain pen, my signature bold and clear across the page.
Then I walked over to the display shelf on my office wall. Resting beside my engineering degrees, my industry awards, and the vintage platinum-and-sapphire pocket watch was a framed photograph of my team standing triumphantly on the tarmac outside a newly inspected aircraft hull. No crutches. No leg braces. No toxic family members, no forced smiles, and no manipulation.
My phone buzzed on the desk.
I picked it up, expecting another client consultation or a media interview request. Instead, it was a simple notification from my banking app: Automatic monthly transfer complete. Your enterprise portfolio is fully secured.

I smiled, locked the phone, and placed it down beside my grandfather's ticking watch.
The stairs at the oceanfront resort were a distant memory—a steep, slippery slope of marble that had tried to break me, but had ultimately only taught me how unbreakable I truly was. I raised my glass of cider toward the bright autumn horizon outside my window, ready for whatever chapter came next."
