Chapter 7 - The New Foundation

Three months later, the spring sunlight poured through the floor-to-ceiling windows of my newly expanded engineering firm's main testing bay. The fiberglass leg brace was finally gone, replaced by a flexible carbon-fiber support sleeve that allowed me to walk with only a slight, purposeful limp.
My desk was covered in architectural blueprints, structural stress models, and a fresh stack of high-profile aviation inspection contracts that totaled well over $200,000.
The door to my office opened, and Vesper stepped in, holding two cups of artisanal coffee and a glossy architectural magazine. She tossed the magazine onto my desk, pointing at the cover story.
""Page fourteen,"" Vesper smiled. ""Take a look at who made the regional Business Innovators list.""
I flipped open the magazine. There, featured in a full-page spread highlighting independent female entrepreneurs who had overcome catastrophic setbacks, was a portrait of me standing confidently beside the titanium framework of a commercial aircraft wing, my carbon-fiber brace visible yet insignificant against the backdrop of industrial success. The headline read: Rising Above: How Engineer Fallon Carter Rebuilt Her Life and Empire from the Ground Up.
""Not bad for someone who spent the winter in a wheelchair,"" Vesper said, raising her coffee cup.
""Not bad at all,"" I replied, clinking my cup against hers.

My phone buzzed on the desk. I glanced down. It was an unrecognized number, likely another prospective client requesting a comprehensive safety audit for a multi-million-dollar transport fleet.
I didn't hesitate. I picked up the phone, unlocked the screen with a steady thumb, and tapped to accept the call. My past was behind me, my foundation was unbreakable, and my future belonged entirely to me.
