Chapter 8 - The Confrontation In The Corridor

As the crowd filed out of the ballroom, Daniel broke past his defense lawyer and stumbled into the marble corridor.

"Evelyn! Please! Just talk to me for one minute!" he shouted, desperate and out of breath.

Two Vance security guards moved in immediately to block his path, but Evelyn raised a single, elegant hand to stop them.

"Let him speak," she said calmly, stepping forward while Julian remained close behind her, an immovable fortress at her back.

Daniel stopped three feet away, his hands shaking violently as he looked at the woman he had discarded like trash in Courtroom 7B.

"Evelyn... look at what's happening to me," Daniel begged, tears streaming down his stubbled cheeks.

"They're taking everything. The court is sending me to prison next month. My mother has to move into a studio apartment."

"You built your life on lies, Daniel," Evelyn said, her voice smooth, steady, and devoid of hatred.

"You stole from my family, you cheated on our marriage, and you tried to leave me on the street with your child."

Daniel dropped to his knees right on the public marble floor, clasping his hands together in pathetic supplication.

"I was stupid! Lauren meant nothing to me! It was an ego trip! Please, Evelyn, you’re carrying my child! For the baby's sake, drop the fraud charges!"

Evelyn looked down at him, feeling nothing but pity for the small, hollow man kneeling before her.

"This child will bear the Whitmore name, Daniel. She will know about her great-grandmother Margaret, and she will know about honor, loyalty, and truth."

"You can't erase me!" Daniel sobbed, looking up with wild, desperate eyes.

"You erased yourself the day you signed that decree with a smile," Julian Vance spoke, stepping forward until his shadow completely engulfed Daniel.

"Every penny of your family’s stolen wealth has been returned to the trust. If you ever approach Evelyn or her daughter again, I will personally ensure your sentence is doubled."

Julian extended his arm, and Evelyn took it gracefully, turning her back on her ex-husband without a second thought.

Daniel stayed on the cold floor, listening to the rhythmic clicking of her heels fading down the hall, realizing too late that he had thrown away an empire for a mirror.
