Chapter 1 - The Fall In Courtroom 7B

Evelyn reached for the polished edge of the counsel table, but her fingers found only empty air.
The courtroom spun in violent sickening arcs of white and gold, the fluorescent bulbs buzzing loudly like angry hornets. She heard Daniel let out an annoyed sigh, as if her fainting were merely an inconvenient theatrical trick designed to steal his spotlight.
"Oh, please, don't be dramatic now, Evelyn," Barbara Mercer sneered from the second row, rolling her eyes toward her daughter-in-law.
"The judge has already signed off. Your time on the stage is over."
Evelyn’s knees buckled completely beneath the hem of her dark blue maternity dress.
Her vision went entirely pitch-black as the cold marble floor rushed up to meet her cheek. She instinctively tucked her chin, wrapping both arms around the six-month swell of her belly to shield her unborn baby from the brutal impact.
The crash never came.
Two massive, iron-strong arms caught her mid-air, pulling her gently against a broad chest wrapped in heavy cashmere and bespoke charcoal wool.
A scent of crisp winter cedar, aged tobacco, and clean rain instantly replaced the stale courthouse air. The man moved with impossible speed, his grip steady and gentle, cradling her head against his shoulder before she could hit the stone.
"Call paramedics right now," a deep, gravelly voice thundered through the small courtroom.
It was not a request; it was an absolute command that shook the glass light fixtures.
The presiding judge stood up from his bench, dropping his wooden gavel onto the blotter with a hollow thud. Every lawyer in the gallery froze in mid-sentence, their arrogant postures dissolving into stunned disbelief.
Daniel frowned, stepping forward with his hands stuffed in his trousers, annoyed by the sudden interruption.
"Hey, pal, who the hell are you? This is a private family proceeding. Back away from my ex-wife."
The tall stranger slowly lifted his head, his piercing slate-gray eyes locking onto Daniel with lethal precision.
The temperature in Courtroom 7B seemed to drop ten degrees in a single second. The man was in his late thirties, possessing the kind of chiseled, predatory elegance that only old money and absolute authority could forge.
Behind him stood four men in tailored dark suits, each wearing the discreet silver lapel pin of the Vance Global security division.
Behind them entered Arthur Sterling, the most feared appellate attorney in the entire state of Illinois, carrying an unsealed leather briefcase.
Barbara Mercer gasped, her face draining of every drop of color as she recognized the man holding Evelyn.
Her expensive designer purse slipped from her fingers, clattering uselessly against the linoleum tiles.

"Julian... Julian Vance?" Barbara choked out, her voice barely a cracked whisper.
Lauren Shaw turned pale, her manicured fingers digging frantically into Daniel’s forearm. "Daniel... who is that? Why is everyone staring?"
