Chapter 2 - The Name That Froze Chicago

Julian Vance did not look at Barbara, nor did he dignify Daniel’s existence with a single word.
He knelt on one knee upon the cold floor, carefully supporting Evelyn’s neck while his thumb gently felt for the pulse along her jawline.
"Evelyn," Julian murmured softly, his voice dropping into a tender, intimate tone nobody in that courtroom had ever heard from him before.
"Hold on. I’m here. You don't have to carry this alone anymore."
Evelyn fluttered her eyelashes open, her breath coming in ragged, shallow gasps against his crisp white collar.
Through the haze of her fainting spell, she saw the sharp jawline, the faint silver scar above his left temple, and the deep, dark eyes that had haunted her memories since she was nineteen.
"Julian?" she whispered, her dry lips barely forming the syllables.
"It's me," he answered, lifting her effortlessly into his arms as if she weighed nothing at all.
He stood up tall, towering over Daniel Mercer like an ancient oak tree over a rotten fence post.
Daniel took an involuntary step backward, intimidated by the sheer physical presence of the man holding his pregnant ex-wife.
"Vance, you've got no business here," Daniel stammered, trying to regain his puffed-up confidence in front of Lauren.
"She signed the final decree. The assets are settled. Whatever charity case you're running, take it outside."
Julian finally turned his gaze toward Daniel, his eyes as cold and dead as a frozen lake in mid-January.
"Every single contract you forced this woman to sign over the last eighteen months is void, Mr. Mercer."
Arthur Sterling stepped forward, dropping a thick stack of blue-backed legal petitions directly onto the judge's bench.
"Your Honor, we are filing an emergency motion to vacate the settlement decree on grounds of systemic corporate fraud and constructive coercion."
"What fraud?" Daniel’s attorney protested, his voice cracking with sudden panic.
"The petitioner reviewed every disclosure! She agreed to the liquidation terms!"
"She reviewed the fraudulent disclosures your client provided after hiding twelve million dollars in Cayman shell accounts," Arthur countered smoothly.
"Accounts opened under the Whitmore family charter, using forged power-of-attorney documents Daniel Mercer stole from his late mother-in-law."
Barbara let out a strangulated squeak, clutching her pearl necklace as if it could keep her throat from closing up entirely.
Evelyn’s younger brother, Ryan, stood frozen by the side exit, his jaw slack as he realized the Mercer family empire was standing on quicksand.
Julian turned toward the double oak doors, carrying Evelyn securely against his chest.

"Have the private ambulance meet us at the east entrance," Julian ordered his lead security guard.
"And Arthur? Freeze every account, every asset, and every construction permit associated with the Mercer name before the markets open tomorrow."
