Chapter 7 - The Unconditional Surrender

Two weeks after Maya’s birth, Nolan received a formal summons to Victoria Sterling’s office. Expecting another brutal legal battle, he arrived dressed in a simple dark suit, looking visibly older, his usual bravado completely gone. When he sat down, Victoria placed the final divorce and custody agreement in front of him. Caroline was not present; she was home bonding with Maya.
Nolan read through the clauses. Under the proposed terms, Caroline was entitled to seventy percent of the total marital estate, complete executive control over the software patents, and sole physical and legal custody. Instead of arguing, fighting, or calling his high-priced litigators, Nolan picked up the pen without hesitating. He signed every page, adding a personal handwritten codicil granting Caroline absolute ownership of their coastal estate and waiving every right to dispute the division.
""Tell Caroline I signed everything exactly as she wanted,"" Nolan whispered to Victoria, his voice breaking. ""Tell her I am transferring my personal voting rights directly into a trust for Maya. I don't care about the company anymore. I just want to make sure Maya is safe, and I hope... maybe one day... when I have become a better man, Caroline might let me meet our daughter."" Victoria, hardened by decades of ugly divorces, was surprised by his total submission. Nolan walked out of the office a broken man, leaving his fortune behind, having finally learned that humility was the only thing he had left.
