Chapter 4 - The Public Ambush

Two months passed. Caroline settled into a quiet, secure home in Marin County, surrounded by rolling hills and ancient redwood trees. Her pregnancy progressed smoothly, her focus remaining entirely on the health of her unborn daughter. Nolan, however, was deteriorating. He spent weeks drinking alone in his hollow penthouse, haunting the charity events and board meetings where Caroline’s absence felt like a glaring indictment. Every attempt he made to deliver flowers, letters, or handwritten apologies was met with formal legal rejections.

Desperate to force an encounter, Nolan orchestrated an ambush at a prestigious pediatric foundation gala that Caroline had co-founded years prior. When Caroline arrived, radiant in an emerald green gown that proudly showed her eight-month baby bump, the cameras flashed furiously. Nolan stepped out from the shadows near the press terrace, looking haggard, his wedding ring still stubbornly on his finger. Before security could step in, he took her arm in front of dozens of journalists. ""Caroline, please,"" he pleaded loudly, playing the role of the remorseful husband. ""Think about our child. Come home.""

The room went dead silent as flashbulbs caught every angle. But Caroline did not flinch or pull away in shame. She looked directly into Nolan’s eyes, her voice clear, composed, and carry-over loud. ""Nolan, our child has a mother who respects herself,"" she said plainly. ""Your penthouse has Celeste’s perfume in it; our nursery does not. Do not use my daughter as a PR stunt."" She calmly walked past him into the ballroom, leaving Nolan paralyzed under the merciless scrutiny of the national press.
