Chapter 5 - The Reckoning at the Boardroom

The public disaster at the gala shattered Ashford Enterprises’ corporate stock. Institutional investors began dumping shares, disgusted by Nolan’s personal conduct and nervous about the looming divorce settlement. Celeste’s father, sensing financial ruin, pulled out of their shared real estate ventures, leaving Nolan with an immense cash shortfall and an imminent quarterly earnings collapse. Nolan was trapped in a financial vice of his own making.
The following Monday, Nolan called an emergency board meeting to restore order and reassert his control. But when he opened the doors to the executive boardroom on the fiftieth floor, he froze. Caroline was seated at the head of the conference table. Flanked by Victoria Sterling and two forensic corporate auditors, Caroline sat calmly, reviewing a thick stack of binding legal documents. The board members, many of whom had known Caroline since the days when they worked out of a modest garage, remained solemnly silent.
""What are you doing here, Caroline?"" Nolan demanded, his voice cracking with panic. Caroline lifted her head. ""I am protecting my investment,"" she answered evenly. Victoria pushed the folder across the mahogany table. The patents licensing Ashford Enterprises' core software had expired and reverted directly to Caroline’s private trust. Furthermore, the forensic audits proved gross mismanagement by Nolan’s inner circle. The board took an immediate vote: Nolan was stripped of his Chief Executive privileges pending the conclusion of the divorce proceedings. Caroline was appointed interim chair of the board. Nolan stood speechless, watching the company he called his own slip directly into the hands of the wife he had discarded.
