Chapter 9 - The Trial by Fire

The sun began to rise over the Atlantic, painting the eastern horizon in brilliant hues of gold, rose, and amber as Matteo’s sedan crossed the George Washington Bridge, leaving the steel canyons of Manhattan behind. The city was waking up, oblivious to the fact that an invisible war had been fought and resolved while it slept.

They returned to the Alpine estate just as the morning mist was burning off the manicured lawns. In the courtyard, Lily Hart was sitting on a stone bench, wrapped in a warm cashmere blanket, holding a steaming mug of tea that Nico’s wife had prepared for her. When she saw the car pull through the gates, she leaped to her feet, her hands trembling.

Clara stepped out of the vehicle first.

Lily stopped several paces back, her eyes wide with awe and guilt. ""Mrs. Duca... I... I'm so sorry. I didn't know what Gabriel was planning. I just wanted to help my mother.""

Clara walked up to the younger woman, closing the distance between them, and did something that shocked both Nico and the guards standing by the gates. She reached out and pulled Lily into a fierce, warm embrace.

""You saved my life, Lily,"" Clara whispered into her ear. ""You stood in front of four hundred people and held my husband's hand. If you hadn't played your part with such courage, Gabriel would have intercepted me before I ever reached the ferry terminal.""

Lily broke into tears, burying her face against Clara’s shoulder. ""I was so terrified. I thought he was going to kill me right there on the dance floor.""

Matteo walked up, reaching into his interior pocket and withdrawing a heavy cashier's check along with two first-class plane tickets to Switzerland. He held them out to the young actress.

""There is a clinic in Zurich,"" Matteo said, his voice softer than Lily had ever heard it. ""The finest oncology team in Europe is expecting your mother on Tuesday morning. Her care has been paid in full for the next three years. There is also enough in this account for you to buy a home in the mountains and never have to audition for a role you don't want ever again.""

Lily stared at the check, her jaw dropping as she read the numbers. ""Mr. Duca... this is... this is too much. I can't accept this.""

""You touched my wedding ring and didn't flinch,"" Matteo said with a faint, warm smirk. ""You gave me the message that brought my wife home. In my world, that makes you family. And the Duca family always pays its debts.""

Nico escorted the weeping, grateful young woman to a waiting car that would take her directly to the private airfield. Matteo and Clara stood side-by-side on the stone terrace, watching the taillights disappear down the winding driveway.

The morning air was crisp and clean, smelling of damp cedar and fallen leaves. Matteo turned to his wife, wrapping his arms around her waist from behind, resting his chin against her shoulder. He felt the steady, calm beating of her heart, and beneath his palms, the quiet promise of the child she was carrying.

""What did you do with Gabriel?"" Clara asked quietly, looking out over the autumn forest.

""Nico put him on an unmarked cargo freighter bound for a tungsten mine in South America,"" Matteo replied smoothly. ""He will spend the rest of his natural life breaking rocks sixteen hours a day with men who don't speak his language and don't care about his schemes. Death would have been too quick an exit for a man who tried to take my world.""

Clara turned in his arms, looping her hands around his neck. Her fingers slid down to his left hand, her thumb pressing firmly, deliberately against the platinum wedding band on his third finger.

""No more secrets, Matteo,"" she said softly, her eyes searching his. ""No more running private investigations behind your back.""

""And no more underestimating the woman who wears my name,"" Matteo answered, bending his head to press his lips against hers in a slow, deep kiss that washed away the stench of gunpowder, swamp water, and fear.
