Chapter 2 - Shadow in the Marble

The applause from the main stage rose and fell as the chamber orchestra concluded a waltz, but Matteo moved through the masquerade with the lethal precision of an executioner. His eyes never lingered on the smiling faces of senators, judges, and high-ranking captains of commerce who bowed their heads respectfully as he brushed past. His focus was locked entirely on Gabriel Rizzo, who stood beside the mezzanine staircase, surrounded by three heavily armed men from his private inner detail.

""Gabriel,"" Matteo said smoothly, closing the distance before the security chief could pivot away.

Gabriel snapped to attention, though the tight set of his jaw betrayed his surprise. ""Boss. Where is Clara? I thought she was resting in the east parlor.""

""She’s gone ahead,"" Matteo replied, his tone conversational, almost bored. ""A migraine. I had Nico take her through the lower garage in the armored sedan. We don't want the press inventing scandals about her fainting at our five-year anniversary gala.""

A subtle flicker of panic skipped through Gabriel's eyes before he masked it with professional neutrality. ""Without my escort? Matteo, the street monitors reported activity from the Marcone syndicate two blocks over. Allowing Mrs. Duca to leave without an armored sweep was a critical risk.""

""Are you questioning how I protect my wife, Gabriel?"" Matteo’s voice dropped into a register that made the security chief’s subordinates shift uncomfortably on their heels. ""Or are you frustrated that you weren't the one holding the car door?""

""Never that, boss,"" Gabriel said, lowering his eyes, though his hand remained hooked inches above his tailored waistband where his suppressed sidearm rested. ""You pay me to anticipate nightmares so you don't have to live them. If she's safe at the estate, my men can stand down from the perimeter.""

""Good. Join me in the mezzanine study. We have an operational discrepancy on the shipping logs out of Newark that needs your immediate sign-off.""

Matteo didn't wait for an answer. He turned his back on Gabriel, walking up the sweeping mahogany staircase. It was an intentional provocation, daring Gabriel to strike in a public room or follow him into an enclosed trap. Footsteps echoed heavily on the treads behind him. Gabriel was following, but the rhythmic shuffle of two additional pairs of leather shoes confirmed the bodyguard detail was tagging along.

They entered the private second-floor library. Matteo shut the heavy oak doors, cutting off the jazz music and the chatter of four hundred guests. The room was lined from floor to ceiling with leather-bound books and oil paintings of the Duca lineage. A crystal decanter of twenty-year bourbon sat atop a claw-foot desk near the panoramic window overlooking the rainy city street below.

Matteo walked behind the desk, his back to the door. ""Tell me about the Fourth Street locker, Gabriel.""

The room plunged into an absolute, suffocating silence.

Behind him, Matteo heard the faint whisper of a holster clasp popping open. Gabriel didn't answer with words. The cocking of a slide was the only response.

""You always were too sharp, Matteo,"" Gabriel said, his voice shedding its deferential polish like an old snakeskin. ""Your old man taught you how to read eyes, but he never taught you how to read ledgers. You thought you were running an empire of honor. Clara saw the rot before you did. She spent the last six months digging into the shell companies behind the port terminals. She found the records of the shipments we intercepted from your cousin. She realized I was retiring you before the winter was out.""

Matteo didn't flinch. He didn't turn around. He looked at the reflection in the dark rain-streaked windowpane. Gabriel was standing four paces back, holding a customized nine-millimeter aimed directly at the base of Matteo’s skull. The two guards flanked him, hands inside their coats.

""Where is she, Gabriel?"" Matteo asked softly.

""She’s somewhere cold,"" Gabriel smiled, a dry, humorless twitch of his mouth. ""She thought she was clever, hiring that little theater girl to buy her an hour of lead time. She thought she could reach the federal prosecutor's safe house in Jersey City with the thumb drives she took from your private vault. But she forgot who built the tracker into her vehicle's navigation system. My boys picked her car up at the toll plaza twenty minutes before you even touched that decoy's hand.""

Matteo exhaled slowly. The knot of fear in his chest hardened into pure tungsten. Clara was alive. Gabriel wouldn't brag about holding a lever unless he still intended to use it to force an abdication.

""You forgot one detail, old friend,"" Matteo whispered.

""What's that, boss?""

""You built the trackers,"" Matteo said, spinning around with superhuman speed, ""but I bought the security detail's loyalty before you were even out of diapers.""

From behind the heavy velvet drapes flanking the bookshelves, two suppressed shots coughed in unison. The guards flanking Gabriel dropped instantly to the carpet without a sound. Before Gabriel could depress his trigger, Matteo lunged across the mahogany desk, his heavy signet ring colliding with Gabriel's wrist, shattering the small bones and sending the pistol skittering under the sofa.

Matteo drove Gabriel face-first into the polished mahogany desk, his forearm pressing against the back of the traitor's neck until Gabriel's breath rasped in ragged wheezes.

""You have thirty seconds to give me an address,"" Matteo snarled against his ear, ""or I will dissect you across this carpet before the orchestra finishes its set.""
