Chapter 7 - Blood and Platinum

By 3:30 AM, the storm had moved east toward the Atlantic, leaving the city draped in an eerie, fog-drenched silence. The grand estate of the Duca family sat perched atop the cliffs of Alpine, New Jersey, overlooking the distant, glittering skyline of Manhattan. Behind the reinforced iron gates and the manicured boxwood hedges, twenty heavily armed men loyal to Nico Moretti had secured the perimeter.

In the cavernous, stone-walled wine cellar beneath the main villa, Gabriel Rizzo sat bound to an oak support pillar, his breath rattling wetly in his chest. His expensive tuxedo was shredded, his knuckles split and swollen. When the heavy steel door creaked open, Gabriel lifted his head, his eyes widening in horror.

Matteo walked down the stone stairs, followed closely by Clara.

She had showered, her dark hair combed back smoothly, dressed in an emerald green silk robe that masked the bruises on her wrists. But she didn't look like a victim; she looked like an empress who had returned to inspect her kingdom's borders. Beside her, Matteo wore a fresh linen shirt, his wounded shoulder neatly bandaged under his suit vest.

""You... you survived,"" Gabriel whispered, the realization draining every drop of color from his weathered face. ""The pumping station... Marco had six men...""

""Marco is feeding the fish in the Hackensack,"" Matteo said, pulling up a wooden chair and placing it directly in front of the bound traitor. Clara stood beside him, resting her hand gently on Matteo's shoulder.

""You thought my wife was a decorative ornament, Gabriel,"" Matteo said, leaning forward, resting his elbows on his knees. ""You thought because she grew up playing concert piano and attending charity boards that she didn't understand the machinery of our life. You forgot that her father was the man who taught me how to read cargo manifests.""

Clara took a step forward, pulling an encrypted flash drive from her pocket and dropping it onto Gabriel's lap. ""Every offshore account you opened in the Cayman Islands under your sister's name. Every bribe you paid to the port authorities in Newark. Every wire transfer from the Marcone family. I didn't just find your plans, Gabriel. I emptied the accounts three hours before I walked into the Blackwood Hotel.""

Gabriel stared at the small black drive as if it were a venomous snake. ""You... you stole the Marcone payoff?""

""I transferred forty-two million dollars directly into an untraceable escrow fund dedicated to the widows and orphans of the dockworkers your friends murdered over the last five years,"" Clara said, her voice freezing the air in the cellar. ""You spent twenty years serving this family, and in one week of greed, you left yourself without a penny, without an ally, and without a future.""

Gabriel began to laugh—a ragged, hysterical sound that echoed against the damp brickwork. ""You think you won? You think the Commission will let this pass? When they find out Marco is dead, they will convene the High Council. They will call for Matteo's head to maintain the peace between the five families!""

""The Commission is already gathering,"" Matteo said, checking his watch. ""The meeting was called an hour ago. At my request. They aren't meeting to discuss my punishment, Gabriel. They are meeting to review the evidence Clara provided of your collusion with the federal narcotics task force.""

Gabriel's laughter cut off instantly. A cold, sickening terror filled his eyes. ""What? That's a lie! I never talked to the feds!""

""The forged emails and wire receipts we planted in your private laptop say otherwise,"" Matteo whispered, a dark, razor-sharp smile touching his lips. ""In our world, Gabriel, treason to the family can sometimes be negotiated with blood money. But working with the feds? The Commission doesn't even hold a vote for that. They simply erase the name from the registry.""
