Chapter 5 - The Family Council Collapses

By Sunday afternoon, the Vance family had called an emergency meeting at Arthur’s two-story colonial home in the suburbs.

I knew this because Jenna had received an invitation from Eleanor, begging her to act as a mediator to "bring Mark back to his senses."

Instead of mediating, Jenna drove straight to my hotel and showed me the frantic family group chat.

Arthur: We need to pool thirty thousand to hire an appellate defense lawyer. Mark is playing hardball.Chloe: I don't have thirty thousand! Dad, you told us Mark signed off on the transfer! Why did Olivia lie about the waiver?Olivia: I did it for all of us! Tyler needed an address in a good district to qualify for the luxury brokerage firm! Why is everyone blaming me?Tyler: If I get kicked out of this house, I'm posting everything Dad did with the machine shop's payroll taxes on Facebook! I'm not going down alone!

Jenna shook her head, handing my phone back with a look of utter disgust. "They're eating each other alive, Mark. The second real consequences showed up, their little golden family shattered like cheap glass."

"They're narcissists," I said, sipping my black coffee. "They only care about loyalty when someone else is paying the bill."

My attorney called thirty minutes later.

"Mark, we just received a formal communication from Arthur’s business counsel," Sarah Sterling announced. "They are begging for an emergency settlement conference tomorrow morning at nine. Arthur is terrified of the state fraud charges."

"What are their terms?"

"They want you to drop the lis pendens on Lakeview in exchange for an unsecured promissory note from Arthur's machine shop, payable over ten years with three percent interest."

I let out a harsh, incredulous laugh that echoed off the hotel walls. "An unsecured note from a bankrupt machine shop? Do they think I'm an idiot?"

"I already laughed his attorney off the phone," Sarah replied smoothly. "Our counter-offer is non-negotiable: Tyler vacates Lakeview by Friday noon. The house is deeded directly into your name as sole equitable owner to satisfy the stolen marital asset claim. And Olivia signs a full waiver of all claims to your pension, 401(k), and future earnings."

"And if they refuse?"

"Then Arthur Vance and Olivia face formal grand jury presentment for felony forgery on Tuesday morning."

Sarah paused, her voice turning crisp and razor-sharp. "Sleep well tonight, Mark. Tomorrow, you get your life back."
