Chapter 1 - The Broken Banquet

The name on the screen stared back at me like an open wound: Tyler Vance.
My wife's twenty-six-year-old brother, who had never held a steady job for more than three months, was living in our dream home. The very four-bedroom house with the wraparound porch and fenced backyard we had spent two grueling years saving every single spare dime to buy.
I looked down at the dining table, my vision blurring with a mixture of disbelief and pure fury.
Beside the centerpiece of white lilies sat the delicate velvet box containing the antique sapphire pendant I had spent two months tracking down for Olivia's thirty-sixth birthday.
"Mark, listen to me," Olivia sobbed, reaching across the table to grab my forearm. "Tyler was going through a terrible breakup. He was living out of Dad's garage, and he had nothing. We were going to replace the money before you noticed, I swear!"
"Replace ninety-two thousand dollars?" My voice came out as a hollow, sand

paper whisper that made the entire room flinch. "You liquidated our joint high-yield savings account six months ago. Where were you planning to magically find ninety-two thousand dollars?"
Olivia’s father, Arthur Vance, cleared his throat and adjusted his silk tie, attempting to summon his usual patriarch authority.
"Mark, lower your voice," Arthur said firmly. "There's no reason to make a public scene in front of our guests. This was an internal family arrangement. Tyler needed stability to get his real estate license off the ground."
"An internal family arrangement?" I echoed, turning my gaze onto the old man. "With my sweat and my overtime pay?"
For two solid years, I had worked sixty-hour weeks as a senior structural engineer. I had skipped weekend family trips, driven a ten-year-old sedan with a failing alternator, and eaten reheated cafeteria meals just to build that house fund.
Olivia’s mother, Eleanor, dabbed her eyes with a cloth napkin. "Mark, you've always earned more than Olivia. You have strong earning power. Tyler needed a leg up in life, or he would have ended up on the street."
"He's twenty-six years old!" Jenna yelled from the end of the table, slamming her palm down. "He didn't need a four-bedroom house in Lakeview, Eleanor! He needed a wake-up call, and instead, you conspired with Olivia to rob her own husband!"
Olivia snapped her head toward Jenna, her tear-streaked face contorting with rage. "Why did you do this, Jenna? You were supposed to be my best friend! Why would you humiliate me on my birthday?"
"Because I watched Mark drive thirty miles in a blizzard last month to jumpstart your car while you were browsing designer couches for Tyler's living room!" Jenna fired back without backing down an inch. "I couldn't stomach the lies anymore. You made everyone in this room complicit in your theft."
Two coworkers at the far end of the long table quietly pushed their chairs back, visibly mortified, and slipped out the side doors into the restaurant hallway.
I looked at Olivia, but I didn't see the woman I had married seven years ago.
I saw a stranger who had looked me in the eyes every morning, kissed my cheek, and asked how my day went, all while secretly funneling my life's work into her family’s bottomless pit.
"Did everyone here know?" I asked, scanning the frozen faces around the table.

Olivia's sister, Chloe, lowered her gaze to her plate. Her father stared straight ahead with cold defiance.
"Happy birthday, Olivia," I said quietly, picking up my car keys and turning my back on the private room.
