Chapter 8 - The Road to Healing

When I walked into Daniela’s hospital room, she was sitting up in bed, propped up against a mountain of pillows. The color had returned to her face, and the swelling around her temple had gone down considerably.
Her eyes widened in fear the moment I walked in. ""Dad? What happened? The police came by two hours ago and asked me a hundred questions. Is Mom... did Mom...?""
I walked over, set the flowers and the milkshake on the bedside table, and sat down on the edge of the bed. I wrapped both arms around my daughter and held her tight. She buried her face in my shoulder and wept softly.
""It’s over, Daniela,"" I whispered into her hair. ""It’s completely over. Mom and that man, Julian, are in county jail. They were arrested this morning.""
Daniela pulled back slightly, her eyes searching mine in disbelief. ""They arrested Mom?""
""She will never hurt you again,"" I promised her. ""Marcus and the police have all the proof. We have the video of what she did to you. We have her phone calls. She will never step foot inside our house again, and she will never take another dime from you.""
Daniela covered her mouth with both hands, letting out a sob that was half terror, half pure, unadulterated relief. ""Dad... I thought you’d blame me. When she pushed me, she told me that if you found out, you’d choose her over me. She always said I was just a burden to you.""
My heart broke into a million pieces hearing those words. I cupped her face in my hands, wiping away her tears with my thumbs.
""Look at me, Daniela. You have never been a burden. Not for one second of your life. Every hour I worked, every flight I caught, every sacrifice I made was because being your father is the greatest honor of my life. Patricia lied to you to keep you silent and terrified. But the truth is out now. You are safe. You are loved. And everything I have belongs to you.""
Daniela threw her arms around my neck, holding on to me like she used to do when she was a little girl scared of thunder. For the first time in years, the tension that lived in her shoulders completely melted away.
The next morning, the doctors discharged Daniela with a clean bill of health. Her concussion was mild, her stitches were healing cleanly, and she was cleared to return home with instructions to rest.
When we pulled up to our house, Daniela looked nervously at the boarded-up living room window.
""What happened to the window?"" she asked quietly.
""SWAT team,"" I answered with a dry chuckle. ""Julian thought he could threaten us. The police disagreed.""
I led Daniela inside. The house was clean, quiet, and Patricia’s belongings were entirely gone. In the living room, Daniela’s favorite classical music played softly on the stereo, and the dining table was covered with a fresh tablecloth and a basket of fresh fruit.
""It feels... different,"" Daniela murmured, looking around the bright, open space.
""It feels like our home now,"" I said. ""Not a prison.""
Just then, a tow truck pulled into the driveway, gently unloading Daniela’s silver Honda Civic. Detective Miller stepped out of his unmarked cruiser behind it, holding Daniela’s silver keychain.
Daniela ran to the front porch, her hands trembling as Detective Miller handed her the keys.
May you like
""Fully inspected, completely safe, and officially yours, young lady,"" Detective Miller smiled warmly. ""And for what it's worth, your father is one of the bravest men I’ve ever met.""
Daniela clutched her keys to her chest, looking back at me with a smile that lit up the entire room.
