Chapter 6 - The Unraveling

Patricia let out a shriek that sounded barely human. She lunged across the granite counter to grab my phone, but I snatched it back effortlessly, slipping it into my pocket.
""Where did you get that?!"" she screamed, her eyes bulging with terror. ""Where was that camera?! You spied on me?!""
""In the smoke detector, Patricia,"" I said, my voice completely devoid of pity. ""Installed two years ago. High-definition video with cloud audio storage. Every single word you said. Every single step you took over our bleeding daughter. And every single second of your romantic phone call with your felon boyfriend.""
Julian’s face twisted into pure venom. He realized within seconds that his entire scheme was collapsing into ashes. ""You set us up, you bastard,"" Julian growled, stepping toward me with his fists clenched. ""Give me that phone right now, or I’ll bury you right next to your daughter.""
""I wouldn't take another step if I were you, Julian,"" I said calmly.
""You think you scare me, old man?"" Julian sneered, pulling a heavy tactical knife from his pocket and flicking open the four-inch serrated blade with a sharp snap. ""Give me the damn phone and sign those title papers, or neither of you is walking out of this house.""
Patricia cried out in terror, covering her mouth. ""Julian, no! Not in the house!""
""Shut up, Patricia!"" Julian roared, never taking his eyes off me. ""We’re already in this deep! He dies, we take the cash, we leave the country today!""
He took two aggressive strides toward me, the knife raised at chest level.
Before he could bridge the gap, the sound of breaking glass shattered the tension. The front living room window blew inward in a shower of glittering fragments as flash-bang grenades tumbled across the rug with a deafening CRACK and blinding light.
""SHERIFF’S OFFICE! DROP THE WEAPON! DOWN ON THE GROUND! NOW!""
The front door kicked open with explosive force. Four heavily armored SWAT deputies poured into the entryway, their tactical carbines raised and laser sights painting bright red dots across Julian’s chest and forehead.
Julian froze, the knife trembling in his hand. The sheer shock of the ambush paralyzed him.
""DROP IT OR YOU’RE DEAD!"" a deputy screamed.
Julian dropped the knife onto the hardwood floor with a sharp clatter and dropped to his knees, raising his hands in the air. Within two seconds, two deputies had tackled him to the floor, driving their knees into his spine and wrenching his arms behind his back in titanium zip-ties.
Patricia scrambled backward against the kitchen cabinets, screaming hysterically. ""Don't shoot! I live here! I'm the homeowner! He forced me! He threatened my life! He made me do it!""
Marcus Vance walked through the shattered entryway, wearing a crisp dark gray suit, holding a certified court injunction and an arrest warrant. Beside him was Detective Miller from the Maricopa County Sheriff's Major Crimes Unit.
""Save your breath, Mrs. Santos,"" Detective Miller said, pulling out a pair of steel handcuffs. ""We’ve been monitoring Julian Morales’s wiretaps for seventy-two hours. We heard every conversation you had with him, including the price you put on your daughter’s car and the percentage of your husband’s life insurance policy you promised to split.""
""Life insurance?!"" I echoed, the words hitting me like a physical blow to the chest.
Marcus turned to me, his expression grave. ""Yes, Javier. Last month, she increased your accidental death coverage to two million dollars through an online broker using your forged digital signature. If this equity scam hadn't worked, you were scheduled to have a fatal 'accident' at your industrial site next week.""
I stared at Patricia. The woman I had loved for over two decades. The woman who had slept in my bed, smiled across from me at Thanksgiving, and watched our daughter take her first steps.
She looked back at me, her face pale, streaked with running mascara, stripped of all arrogance.
""Javier... please,"" she sobbed, dropping to her knees as Detective Miller clicked the cuffs around her wrists. ""I was confused! I was depressed! Julian tricked me! He blackmailed me! Please don't let them take me! Javier! Tell them you forgive me!""
""I told you twenty-two years ago, Patricia,"" I said, looking down at her without an ounce of warmth. ""My life was for Daniela. And you proved to me that you were never her mother.""

""Get them out of here,"" Detective Miller barked.
The deputies dragged Julian and Patricia out through the shattered doorway into the blazing Arizona morning, where three patrol cruisers sat with their emergency lights painting the cul-de-sac in flashing crimson and sapphire.
