Chapter 9 - Dismantling the Empire

Two months later, the glass conference room on the forty-second floor of the family tower in downtown Atlanta was completely cleared out.

The corrupt board members who had enabled Richard's fraud had all resigned under threat of federal indictment.

The commercial debt had been restructured, the stolen funds recovered from offshore accounts, and the forged codicil formally voided by the probate judge.

I stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, looking out over the sprawling city below, dressed in a sharp charcoal suit.

Behind me, the door opened, and Lauren entered carrying a slim leather folder, her hair pulled back into a sophisticated twist.

She looked radiant, confident, and completely in her element as the newly appointed head of the family foundation.

"The final audit is complete, Mr. CEO," she teased, setting the documents onto the glass table.

"Don't call me that," I laughed, walking over and pulling her into my arms. "I'm still just a logistics guy."

"You're the man who saved four thousand employees from losing their pensions, Mark," she said, resting her hands on my chest.

"Your father's true will was read this morning in private chambers."

"And?" I asked, looking into her bright blue eyes.

"He left sixty percent of the voting shares to the charitable land trust you designed five years ago," Lauren revealed, her smile widening.

"The waterfront properties are going to be turned into a public preserve, exactly as you always wanted."

"And Richard's share?"

"Richard's share was legally forfeited under the slayer statute," she answered softly.

"Every penny of his inheritance has been redirected into a compensation fund for the victims of his financial schemes."

A knock on the door interrupted us, and my new chief of operations stepped inside with a tablet.

"Sir, the federal prosecutors just called," he reported respectfully.

"Richard took the plea bargain twenty minutes ago. Life without parole, no appeals."

I closed my eyes for a long moment, feeling the final, heavy chain of the past drop away from my shoulders.

"Thank you, David," I said. "That will be all for today."

The door closed, leaving Lauren and me alone in the high, quiet office above the city.

The nightmare was finally over; the truth had been dragged into the daylight, and the family name had been redeemed.
