Chapter 10 - The Table on the Terrace

One year after that fateful dinner at the steakhouse, the evening air was warm and fragrant across the terrace of our new home in Savannah.
The Spanish moss swayed gently in the coastal breeze, and the distant sound of the ocean whispered through the live oaks.
There were no locked boxes, no hidden cameras, and no shadows lurking behind the headlights.
We had sold the old suburban house with its painful memories and built a sanctuary of our own design.
A long wooden dining table was set for four on the stone terrace, overlooking the salt marshes bathed in the purple glow of twilight.
Lauren walked out through the French doors carrying a bowl of fresh coastal shrimp pasta, wearing a simple white sundress.
Her stomach was rounded with new life—our first child, a baby boy due in early spring.
"Dinner is served, handsome," she called out with a radiant laugh that chased away every lingering ghost.
I walked over from the outdoor grill, carrying a chilled bottle of sparkling cider, and kissed her gently on the lips.
"You shouldn't be carrying heavy bowls, Mrs. Vance," I scolded playfully, taking the dish from her hands and placing it on the table.
"I'm pregnant, Mark, not fragile," she replied, swatting my arm affectionately as she sat down in the comfortable wicker armchair.
I took my seat across from her, just as I had twelve months ago in that dark, deceptive restaurant.
I looked at her glowing face, the candlelight flickering in her blue eyes, and felt an overwhelming wave of pure gratitude wash over me.
A soft, genuine smile spread across my face.
Lauren caught my expression and paused, her fork hovering over her plate with mock suspicion.
"Why are you smiling like that, Mark?" she asked, her eyes sparkling with amusement.
"Are you remembering something from work?"
I reached across the table, taking her soft, warm hand into both of mine, tracing the simple gold wedding band on her finger.
"No," I answered softly, my voice filled with steady, unbreakable devotion.
"I was just thinking that this time, I don't have to look at my phone to know I have everything I'll ever need right in front of me."
Lauren laughed, a warm, resonant sound that filled the warm southern night with pure joy.
She squeezed my fingers tightly, leaning forward to share the quiet peace we had bled to protect.

We had walked through the fire of betrayal, faced the darkest secrets of our blood, and emerged unbroken.
The shadows were gone, the ledger was clean, and our future was finally, beautifully our own.
