Chapter 8 - The New Titan

Wade was standing on the polished concrete floor of an enormous, state-of-the-art manufacturing facility. He was wearing a tailored charcoal suit without a tie, his dark hair neatly cut, looking rested, powerful, and utterly composed.

The headline beneath his picture read:

THE QUIET GENIUS: How Wade Hollister Took Apex Systems From Component Supplier to Global Powerhouse.

Eliza’s hands shook so violently she nearly dropped the magazine. She flipped frantically to page twenty-four, her eyes racing across the glossy text.

Following the collapse of Reid Calder’s fraudulent patent claims, Apex Industrial Systems—Calder Tech’s primary enterprise rival—had approached Wade with an extraordinary proposition. They didn't just want to license his high-pressure injection valves; they wanted him to head their advanced engineering division. Wade had agreed, but on one condition: he retained fifty-one percent ownership of all future system iterations through his newly formed independent firm, Hollister Dynamics.

Within five months, Wade had engineered a revolutionary thermal-regulation manifold that reduced hydraulic energy loss by forty percent. Ford and Caterpillar had signed exclusive multi-year supply contracts worth upwards of eighty million dollars. Apex had promoted him to Executive Vice President of Technology and granted him a twelve percent equity stake in the parent corporation.

The article included several photographs. In one, Wade was shaking hands with the Governor of Ohio at a ribbon-cutting ceremony for a new two-hundred-thousand-square-foot facility in Dublin.

In another photograph, Wade stood beside an elegant, striking woman with dark auburn hair, dressed in a sharp navy blazer. The caption read: Wade Hollister with Apex Chief Legal Counsel and Vice President of Operations, Dr. Clara Sterling, at the Dublin facility opening.

Clara Sterling. Marcus Vance’s brilliant junior partner, the woman who had walked into Calder Tech's boardroom six months ago and delivered the legal blow that had crushed Reid Calder.

The article concluded with a quote from Wade:

May you like

""For a long time, I believed that supporting someone meant staying in the background and letting them take credit for the work you did together. But a real partnership isn't about carrying someone who looks down on you. It's about building something where both people respect the craft, honor their commitments, and show up with clean hands. Once you stop wasting energy on people who only see you as a stepping stone, it's amazing how fast you can build something that lasts.""

Eliza stood behind the laminated counter of the freight dispatch office, tears blurring the glossy print of Wade’s face. She remembered the fishing boat he had sold for eighty-four hundred dollars. She remembered the way he used to bring her coffee in bed every single morning while she looked at her phone. She remembered how she had laughed on that Nashville hotel bed, believing she was flying toward an empire, completely blind to the fact that the only person holding up the sky had been the quiet man waiting for her at home.
