Chapter 5 - The Architect in the Shadows

The silence in the boardroom was absolute. Eliza felt the air being crushed out of her lungs. She looked from the blueprints on the table to Reid, whose mouth was hanging slightly open, his confident posture collapsing inward.
""Do these look familiar, Reid?"" Jonathan asked, tapping the technical drawings. ""These are the CAD schematics for the Model-7 hydraulic injection valve. The very system that won you an award last November. The system you claimed you engineered during your weekend retreats in Chicago.""
""Dad—""
""The patent application you filed under your name last year was fraudulent,"" Jonathan said coldly. ""The design wasn't yours. It wasn't Calder Tech’s, either. Every single critical tolerance, the secondary thermal bypass, and the fluid dynamic formulas were created on a private workstation by Wade Hollister between March and August of 2024.""
Eliza grabbed the edge of the conference table to steady herself. ""Wade? Wade helped me review some files at night, Mr. Calder! He was just doing basic drafting! He's a plant technician! He doesn't own those designs!""
""He owns the copyright, Mrs. Hollister,"" a new voice spoke from the corner of the room.
Marcus Vance stepped out from the shadow of the board room's executive lounge, accompanied by a woman wearing the dark suit of a federal compliance officer. Marcus laid a crisp, bonded document in front of Jonathan Calder.
""Mr. Hollister registered the proprietary geometry of the thermal bypass six months before Calder Tech submitted its provisional patent,"" Marcus said smoothly. ""He holds the primary intellectual property rights. Calder Tech has been manufacturing and distributing those valves to Ford and General Motors without a valid commercial license.""
Reid stumbled back from the podium, his voice cracking. ""That’s impossible! He never filed anything! He’s a mechanic in a grease pit!""
""He's a mechanical designer with a degree from Purdue and fifteen years of industrial experience,"" Marcus said, his voice dripping with icy disdain. ""And unlike you, Mr. Calder, he actually understands how pressure differentials work. You stole his work to impress your father. Your father used that work to secure forty million dollars in enterprise supply contracts. And Mrs. Hollister here facilitated the transfer of those files using her executive credentials.""
Jonathan Calder slowly stood up. At seventy-one, he still possessed the intimidating bulk of a former ironworker. He looked at his son with unvarnished disgust.
""The board has just voted unanimously to terminate your employment, Reid. Effective immediately. You are stripped of your vice presidency, your company vehicle, and your stock options. Security is currently clearing your office.""
Reid lunged forward. ""Dad, you can't do this! We have the GM contract review next week! They won't deal with anyone else!""
""GM won't deal with a felon,"" Jonathan said flatly. ""And neither will I. Get out of my building before I have the police escort you to the street in handcuffs.""
Reid turned toward Eliza, his eyes wild with terror and fury. ""You said he was stupid! You told me he never looked at the accounts! You said he was just some boring country boy who fixed lawnmowers!""
""Reid, stop, please—"" Eliza cried, tears finally breaking through her mascara, carving black tracks down her cheeks.
""Get away from me!"" Reid screamed, shoving her hand off his arm as he backed toward the exit. ""You brought this disaster into my life! You ruined everything!""
Reid bolted through the double doors, his hurried footsteps echoing down the marble hallway.
Eliza stood frozen in the center of the boardroom, completely abandoned. She turned slowly toward Marcus Vance, her hands trembling uncontrollably.
""Where is Wade?"" she sobbed. ""Where is my husband?""

Marcus gathered his papers, tapped them neatly against the table, and slid them into his leather briefcase.
""Mr. Hollister is currently meeting with the chief licensing director of Apex Industrial Systems,"" Marcus said calmly. ""And as of 8:45 this morning, he has filed for a complete dissolution of marriage on the grounds of gross neglect, financial misconduct, and fraud. Have a good morning, Mrs. Hollister.""
