Chapter 6 - The Emptied House

When Eliza arrived back at the rental house at 11:30 that morning, the driveway was empty. Wade’s truck was gone.

She slammed her car into park, practically threw herself out of the vehicle, and ran up the front steps. ""Wade!"" she screamed, bursting through the unlocked front door. ""Wade, we have to talk! You don't understand what happened!""

Silence answered her.

The house smelled faintly of lemon wood polish and clean air. Eliza stumbled into the kitchen.

On the kitchen counter, lined up with geometric precision, were four items:

First, her house key.

Second, her garage door opener.

Third, Wade’s gold wedding band, polished and gleaming.

Fourth, a cashier’s check from the credit union in the amount of exactly $24,670.

Beside the check was a single sheet of notebook paper with Wade’s neat, deliberate handwriting:

This is half of what remained in our joint account before your unauthorized transfer. I didn't touch your personal savings. I didn't touch your clothes. The twenty-two thousand five hundred you sent to Reid's shell company has been frozen by the county court as contested marital funds subject to federal fraud review. You can ask Reid to pay you back. I’m sure he’s good for it.

Eliza dropped to her knees on the kitchen linoleum, clutching the piece of paper to her chest as dry, choking sobs racked her body.

She scrambled to her feet and ran into the bedroom. His side of the closet was completely bare. Not a single shirt remained on the hangers. His dresser drawers were pulled out, emptied, and pushed back in with typical Wade precision. In the bathroom, his shaving kit, his toothbrush, and his cologne were gone.

He hadn't left a mess. He hadn't broken a mirror or slashed a photograph. He had simply erased his existence from the home they had shared for five years.

Her phone began ringing frantically in her purse.

She dug it out with shaking hands, praying it was Wade calling to tell her this was a nightmare, that he was waiting at a diner down the street to hear her apologize.

It was Tessa.

""Eliza! Oh my God, have you seen LinkedIn?!"" Tessa shrieked through the speaker. ""Someone just posted an internal memo from Calder Tech! They said Reid was fired for corporate espionage and your name is all over the industry forums! People are saying you stole proprietary schematics! What the hell happened in Nashville?!""

Eliza couldn't breathe. Her vision swam with gray spots. ""Tessa... Tessa, Wade knows. He knows about everything.""

""What do you mean he knows?!"" Tessa shouted. ""You told me he was an idiot! You told me he was just some boring guy who sat on the couch while you ran the world!""

""He owns the patents,"" Eliza whispered, her voice barely audible over the roaring in her ears. ""He owns everything Calder Tech was selling. Reid didn't design the valves. Wade did.""

There was a long, suffocating pause on the other end of the line.

""Wait..."" Tessa’s voice changed, losing its frantic concern, replaced by a sudden, chilling realization. ""You mean to tell me you traded the guy who actually built the company... for a guy who was just riding his father's coat-tails?""

""Tessa, please, I need a place to stay—""

""Don't call me, Eliza,"" Tessa said flatly. ""My fiancé's firm does business with Calder Tech. If my name gets dragged into an intellectual property lawsuit, my wedding is ruined. Don't contact me again.""

The line went dead.

Eliza stood alone in the empty bedroom, the silence pressing down on her like a tombstone.
