Chapter 7 - The Trap at the Tarmac

At five o'clock on Thursday morning, a heavy coastal fog rolled across the private aviation terminal at Charleston International Airport.
Derek Whitmore stood inside the small hangar, wearing dark jeans, a baseball cap pulled low over his brow, and carrying a single duffel bag packed with seventy thousand dollars in cash and bearer bonds.
A twin-engine chartered Cessna sat on the tarmac, its propellers slowly beginning to turn with a low, rumbling hum.
"Everything set for the flight plan to San José?" Derek asked the charter pilot, his voice tight with anxious urgency.
"Flight plan is filed, Mr. Whitmore," the pilot replied, checking his iPad.
"We just need clearance from ground control to taxi."
Derek let out a long, ragged exhale, looking back toward the terminal doors.
He was fifteen minutes away from international airspace, far beyond the reach of state subpoenas, custody hearings, and family scandals.
He could start over in Central America under an assumed corporate identity, leaving the wreckage of his ruined empire behind.
Suddenly, the roar of the airplane’s engines sputtered and died as the master fuel cutoff was engaged from the control tower.
The hangar’s overhead floodlights blasted on with blinding intensity, illuminating the entire concrete apron in brilliant, stark white light.
Four unmarked black SUVs screeched onto the tarmac, boxing the Cessna in from all sides.
"Federal Bureau of Investigation! Turn off the aircraft! Step away with your hands visible!" a voice boomed through a megaphone.
Derek froze, his duffel bag slipping from his numb fingers and hitting the damp asphalt with a heavy thud.
Twelve tactical agents with drawn weapons emerged from behind the vehicles, accompanied by Senior Deputy Marshal Jenkins and Michael Grant.
"Derek Whitmore," Marshal Jenkins announced, stepping forward with a crisp federal warrant in his hand.
"You are under arrest for flight to avoid prosecution, violation of a protective order, and federal wire fraud."
Derek stumbled backward against the airplane’s landing gear, his eyes darting frantically from left to right like a cornered rat.
"This is private property! I'm traveling on legitimate business!" he screamed, his voice cracking into high-pitched hysteria.
"Your bail conditions explicitly forbade leaving the jurisdiction, Derek," Michael Grant said, stepping into the light with his hands casually in his overcoat pockets.
"And your passport was officially flagged the moment you purchased a charter ticket using an offshore account we froze yesterday."
Two federal agents shoved Derek face-down onto the cold concrete, twisting his arms behind him and securing heavy steel cuffs around his wrists.
Derek’s cheek was pressed hard against the grease-stained asphalt, his designer cap rolling into a puddle of rainwater.
"Claire did this!" Derek sobbed, tears and grit smearing across his face.
"Tell that crazy woman she won't get a single penny! I'll burn every asset to the ground before she sees a dime!"
Michael walked over, stopping inches from Derek's face, looking down at him with cold, unshakable disgust.
"Mrs. Whitmore isn't interested in your money, Derek. She already controls the Bennett Maritime Trust, the firm, and full legal custody of your children."
May you like
Michael leaned down, whispering the final, devastating truth into Derek's ear.
"You didn't leave a single penny to burn, Derek. You are bankrupt, homeless, and facing twenty years in federal prison. Have a safe trip to lockup."
