Chapter 4 - The Poisoned Well

By ten o'clock the following morning, Dr. Bennett discharged me with strict instructions for complete bed rest.

Michael drove Oliver and me back to our historic home on Meeting Street, accompanied by two licensed private security guards who stationed themselves at the wrought-iron front gates.

Stepping into the foyer felt like entering the belly of an empty museum.

The shattered crystal bowl had been swept away, but the scuff marks on the baseboards remained as stark reminders of the violence that had taken place.

While Oliver played quietly in the nursery with a bonded nanny Michael had vetted, my phone rang on the kitchen island.

It was Eleanor Whitmore, Derek’s formidable mother.

I took a slow breath, hit the speaker icon, and placed the phone on the counter beside Michael.

"Hello, Eleanor."

"Claire, dear," Eleanor’s voice was dripping with honeyed condescension, smooth as Charleston sweet tea.

"I am calling to ensure that cooler heads prevail before this embarrassing spectacle damages the family’s social standing any further."

"Your son stood by while his mistress dragged me across my own floor, Eleanor," I said, keeping my voice level.

"I was thirty-three weeks pregnant, and Oliver was in my arms."

Eleanor sighed dramatically through the receiver, as if my trauma were nothing more than an inconvenient delay.

"We all know Derek has an intense temperament, Claire. And certainly, that dreadful girl from the marketing firm exercised poor judgment. But you must consider the Whitmore name."

"I am considering my children, Eleanor," I replied firmly.

"The press is already circling the courthouse, Claire," Eleanor pressed, her tone sharpening into veiled intimidation.

"Derek’s board of directors is holding an emergency inquiry at noon. If you do not withdraw the criminal charges and sign a joint public statement dismissing this as a tragic misunderstanding, the family trust will freeze your household allowance."

Michael leaned over the counter and spoke directly into the phone.

"Mrs. Whitmore, this is Michael Grant. I suggest you consult your criminal defense counsel before making another communication that constitutes witness tampering under federal statutes."

The line went dead with a sharp, furious click.

Michael smiled, making a brief notation in his leather legal pad.

"That call was recorded on our secure client portal. Every threat she makes is another nail in Derek’s legal coffin."

Just then, my laptop chimed with an incoming encrypted email from our forensic accountant.

I clicked open the PDF attachment, scrolling through the newly uncovered transactions from Derek’s personal accounts.

"Michael... look at this," I whispered, pointing to a recurring monthly transfer that began eight months ago.

Every single month, twelve thousand dollars had been wired from our joint savings account to an upscale boutique apartment building in the French Quarter.

The lease was under the name of Vanessa Cross, but the guarantor was Derek Whitmore.

Below that was a receipt for an eight-thousand-dollar custom nursery suite delivered to Vanessa’s address three weeks ago.

My stomach plummeted into icy darkness.

"Vanessa is pregnant too," I murmured, the realization suffocating me.

"He wasn't just planning to replace me, Michael. He was building an entire parallel family with my grandfather’s money."
