Chapter 6 - The Golden Child Crumbles

Inside the Escalade, Vanessa's composure completely disintegrated.

She watched in absolute horror as the troopers shoved Derek's face down against the wet hood of a police cruiser, ratcheting heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists until the metal clicked into bone.

Derek was crying now, begging the officers not to ruin his tailored coat, his tough-guy persona evaporating into pathetic, sniffling whimpers.

Vanessa locked the SUV doors, grabbed her phone with trembling fingers, and dialed my personal number with hysterical urgency.

In my penthouse study, the phone on my desk buzzed three times before I tapped the speaker button.

"Richard Bennett," I answered calmly.

"Daddy! Daddy, please pick up! Oh God, Daddy, help us!" Vanessa screamed into the line, her voice cracking into high-pitched sobs. "There are cops everywhere! The FBI is here! They've got Derek pinned against the car! They're treating us like criminals!"

I looked at the monitor showing her terrified face illuminated by the police sirens through the Escalade's tinted windshield.

"You are criminals, Vanessa," I said quietly, the words dropping like lead weights into the silence between us.

"No, Daddy, it was Derek's idea! I swear to God it was all Derek!" she wept frantically, throwing her husband under the bus without a second's hesitation. "He told me you agreed to the deal! He said you wanted us to take the furniture so the resort could be remodeled! He forced me to sign those filings, Daddy! You know your little girl would never steal from you!"

A bitter laugh escaped my throat.

"I watched you fifteen minutes ago on the south terrace camera, Vanessa," I replied, my voice steady and unforgiving. "I watched you trample Eleanor's French tapestry into the dirt. I watched you steal her personal jewelry box from my desk, and I heard you say that everything in this haven belongs to you."

The line went dead silent for three agonizing seconds as Vanessa realized the trap had been closed around her from the very start.

"Daddy... please," she whispered, her voice reduced to a broken whimper. "Mom wouldn't want you to send your only daughter to prison. Think of Mom."

"Your mother spent her final months alone in a hospital room while you spent her money in Europe," I told her, my heart aching with thirty years of repressed sorrow. "Eleanor warned me about you and Derek before she died. She asked me to protect this sanctuary, and that is exactly what I am doing."

I tapped the screen and disconnected the call.

On the monitor, Captain Reynolds knocked hard on the Escalade's driver-side window with the heavy butt of his tactical flashlight.

"Vanessa Caldwell, unlock the vehicle and step out immediately!" the captain ordered through the glass. "If you do not open this door in three seconds, we will breach the glass!"

Vanessa dropped her phone onto the passenger seat, burying her face in her hands as she wept uncontrollable tears of humiliation and panic.

She slowly clicked the door lock, pushed the handle open, and stepped out into the freezing coastal drizzle.

The illusion of high-society elegance vanished instantly.

Her designer shoes slipped in the wet mud beside the driveway, sending her tumbling onto her knees into the puddle at the feet of the state troopers.

A female officer pulled her arms behind her back, snapping a pair of chrome cuffs over her wrists with crisp, professional efficiency.

As they hoisted her up, Vanessa caught sight of Marcus standing under the lobby porch, recording the entire arrest on a secure tablet.

"Marcus, tell him to stop this!" Vanessa shrieked, her voice echoing across the courtyard as rain soaked her hair and ruined her makeup. "Tell my father to call them off! I'm his daughter! I'm a Bennett!"

Marcus didn't move an inch.

He lowered the tablet slightly, looked down at her with stone-cold disgust, and shook his head.

"A Bennett builds, Mrs. Caldwell," Marcus said quietly. "You only know how to steal."
