Chapter 5 - Sirens in the Fog

By 5:15 a.m., the fourth moving truck was packed full, its hydraulic rear door slamming shut with a heavy metallic boom that echoed across the deserted beach.
The four massive diesel engines roared to life, spewing gray exhaust into the cold morning drizzle.
Derek hopped into the passenger seat of his Escalade, while Vanessa settled into the driver's seat, revving the high-performance engine until the exhaust growled through the courtyard.
"Convoy moves out now!" Derek yelled through his open window to the lead truck driver. "Take the Coastal Highway north, bypass the state weigh stations, and don't stop until you reach the Dover logistics terminal!"
The lead truck rolled forward, its massive tires crunching across the gravel driveway toward the resort's open wrought-iron gates.
As the truck's front bumper crossed the boundary line between the private property and the state highway, bright crimson and cobalt lights exploded out of the coastal darkness.
Four heavy-duty state police cruisers pulled out from behind the sand dunes, their tires screaming against the wet asphalt as they executed a synchronized rolling blockade.
Two unmarked black federal SUVs swung across the main entrance lane, cutting off any possibility of retreat, while three more tactical cruisers boxed in the rear trucks from behind the maintenance sheds.
"Driver, turn off the engine and step out with your hands visible!" an amplified voice boomed from the lead police cruiser's PA system, cutting through the sound of the ocean surf. "All vehicle operators, shut down your ignitions immediately!"
Vanessa hit the brakes so hard the Escalade's tires skidded across the wet pavement, throwing Derek forward against his seatbelt.
"What is this?!" Vanessa shrieked, her knuckles turning white on the leather steering wheel. "Derek, what did you do?! Who called the cops?!"
"Calm down! Just shut up and let me handle it!" Derek shouted back, his face turning pale underneath his expensive tan.
He grabbed the fraudulent deed folder from the center console, shoved his door open, and stepped out onto the wet driveway with his hands raised in righteous indignation.
"Officers, what is the meaning of this harassment?!" Derek yelled, waving the forged papers in the air like a shield. "I am Derek Caldwell, the managing partner and lawful owner of Seabrook Haven! These vehicles are executing an authorized corporate asset transfer! Clear this roadway immediately or I'll have your badges!"
From behind the lead black SUV stepped Margaret Hayes, dressed in a sharp charcoal overcoat, accompanied by Special Agent Miller of the FBI's Financial Crimes Division and Captain Reynolds of the Delaware State Police.
Agent Miller didn't flinch, and he didn't lower his flashlight.
He walked straight up to Derek, his heavy boots splashing through the puddles, holding a federal search and arrest warrant encased in a plastic sleeve.
"Derek Caldwell?" Agent Miller asked, his voice flat, steady, and chillingly authoritative.
"Yes, that's right! And as I told your men, I own this property—"
"Derek Caldwell, you are under arrest pursuant to an indictment issued by the United States District Court," Miller interrupted, cutting him off mid-sentence. "You are charged with wire fraud, interstate transportation of stolen property, identity theft, and grand larceny exceeding five million dollars."
Derek's mouth fell open, his eyes widening in pure terror as two uniformed state troopers stepped behind him, grabbed his wrists, and twisted his arms behind his back.
"Wait! There's a mistake!" Derek stammered, squirming against the grip of the troopers. "I have a legal deed! Richard Bennett signed over the resort three weeks ago! Look at the county stamp! Look at the signature!"

Margaret Hayes stepped forward, a cold, elegant smile gracing her face in the flashing emergency lights.
"The signature was forensically debunked eighteen days ago, Derek," Margaret said smoothly, holding up an official court declaration. "The notary commission you used expired in 2014, and the owner of the postal box you registered it to was arrested on Thursday. Mr. Bennett never signed your papers. In fact, he's watching you right now."
