Chapter 8 - The Stranded Influencer

While Michael slept off his exhaustion in the Penthouse guest suite, Vanessa was discovering the harsh reality of life without a benefactor.
She had dragged her broken suitcase down the dusty highway toward San José del Cabo, looking for a cheap hotel that would accept a credit card with four hundred dollars of available credit.
She ended up at a rundown, concrete motel three miles inland from the beach, where the air conditioner rattled like a lawnmower and the pool was filled with green algae.
Her phone had completely died during the walk.
When she finally plugged it into the loose wall outlet in her dingy motel room, she immediately opened Instagram to check her notifications.
Her direct messages were an absolute bloodbath.
A tourist who had been sitting near Gate B22 at Denver International Airport had recorded her entire gate meltdown on TikTok.
The video had gone massively viral under the caption: "Ungrateful Daughter-In-Law Demands Luxury Trip She Never Paid For—Gets Instantly Canceled At The Gate!"
It already had 4.2 million views.
The comments were brutal:
“The mother-in-law is an absolute legend!”
“Imagine flexing a $12k vacation when you have $400 in your bank account!”
“Her husband dumping his wedding ring in the lobby was the best part!”
Vanessa screamed, hurling her phone across the cheap motel mattress.
Her boutique social media consulting agency in Denver had already received thirty negative reviews on Google.
Two of her primary brand clients had sent automated emails terminating their influencer partnerships due to "public conduct violating community standards."
Panicking, she picked up the motel room phone and dialed her mother in Aspen.
"Mom!" Vanessa wailed into the receiver. "You have to wire me three thousand dollars right now! Michael abandoned me in Mexico!"
"Vanessa?" her mother’s voice answered, sounding cold, rigid, and deeply embarrassed. "Your father and I just saw the video on Facebook. Is that true? Did Carol pay for that entire vacation?"
"Mom, that doesn't matter! She humiliated me!"
"It matters to your father and me," her mother replied sharply. "We have spent thirty years building our family’s reputation in this town. You bragged to all our friends at the country club that you and Michael were staying in the Presidential Suite with your own savings!"
"Mom, please—"
"I will buy you a one-way economy ticket back to Denver," her mother said with icy finality. "After that, you are on your own. You will find a divorce lawyer, and you will apologize to Carol Miller in writing before you ever set foot in our house again."

The line went dead.
Vanessa sat on the edge of the stained motel mattress, listening to the dial tone, realizing that every bridge she had ever crossed had just burned down to the water.
