Chapter 6 - The Unraveling

A suffocating silence stretched across the telephone line.
Down in the lobby, I could see Michael holding the receiver to his ear, his head bowed so low his chin touched his chest.
Beside him, Vanessa was hissing in his ear, gesturing violently with her hands, clearly ordering him to demand the room keys.
"Mom..." Michael stammered, his voice breaking into pieces. "You know who paid for it."
"I want you to say it, Michael," I said clearly. "I want you to say it loud enough for the staff, for the guests, and most importantly, for your wife to hear."
Michael looked up.
He looked at Vanessa, who was glaring at him with venomous eyes, her mouth twisted in an ugly snarl.
Then he looked at the grand ocean view beyond the lobby, the infinity pools, the pristine paradise he had allowed his wife to throw away over a cheap lie.
Something snapped inside my son.
The invisible leash Vanessa had held around his throat for four years suddenly tore open.
"My mother paid for it!" Michael shouted, his voice booming across the cavernous marble lobby with such force that several checking-in guests gasped.
Vanessa took a step back, shocked. "Michael, shut up!"
"No! You shut up, Vanessa!" Michael roared, turning on her with tears streaming down his flushed face. "My mother paid twelve thousand dollars out of her own pocket! She gave us First Class flights, she gave us the plunge-pool suite, she gave us everything! And you treated her like garbage at the gate!"
"Michael, how dare you—"
"You lied to those people in Denver!" Michael shouted, his hands shaking in the air. "You told them we saved up! You told them my mother was an unwanted tagalong! You made me stand there like a coward while you insulted the only person who has ever sacrificed anything for me!"
The lobby went completely, breathlessly quiet.
Vanessa looked around frantically, realizing that every single eye in the five-star resort was staring directly at her.
The polished image of the wealthy, sophisticated influencer wife had been shredded into bloody ribbons.
"You pathetic loser," Vanessa sneered, her voice dropping into a hateful hiss. "You're choosing your mommy over your wife? I want a divorce!"
"Good!" Michael screamed back, ripping his silver wedding band off his finger and hurling it across the marble floor.
The ring bounced with a sharp metallic clatter, rolling to a stop against the base of a bronze fountain.
"Get out of my sight, Vanessa!" Michael yelled, dropping his face into his hands. "Take your broken luggage and get the hell away from me!"
Vanessa stared at the ring on the floor, her chest heaving.
She realized in an instant that her bluff had failed catastrophically.
She had no money, no hotel room, no return flight, and the man who had funded her lifestyle had just discarded his wedding vows in front of fifty witnesses.
Without another word, Vanessa grabbed the handle of her broken three-thousand-dollar suitcase, dragging it loudly across the marble floor as she stormed out of the lobby into the blistering afternoon sun.
Michael collapsed onto one of the lobby sofas, burying his face in his hands, weeping uncontrollably.
I listened to his sobs through the telephone receiver.
"Señor Morales," I said into the phone.

"Yes, Mrs. Miller?" the manager replied softly.
"Please send a bellman to escort my son up to the Penthouse," I instructed. "And send up a pot of hot coffee."
