Chapter 8 - The Reality Check

Watching her parents drive away broke something inside Sloan. The haughty, untouchable influencer facade she had worn for years crumbled entirely. She collapsed onto one of the large duffel bags in my driveway, burying her face in her manicured hands, weeping bitterly.

The two children, Leo and Maya, stood beside the porch steps, shivering in their winter coats, looking confused and frightened.

Seeing the children broke my heart, but I knew that caving now would only drag us all back into the same toxic cycle of exploitation. I stepped away from the intercom, put on my boots and wool coat, unlocked the front door, and stepped out onto the porch.

Caleb looked up, a glimmer of desperate hope flashing in his tired eyes. ""Mom?""

""The children can come inside for hot soup and warm cocoa,"" I stated clearly, keeping my tone firm and professional. ""You and Sloan will remain out here on the porch while Marcus’s junior associates oversee the packing of your essential belongings.""

As if on cue, a large commercial moving truck pulled up to the curb, followed by two uniformed off-duty deputies whom Marcus had arranged to ensure a peaceful civil standby.

""What is this?"" Caleb whispered, his voice trembling as he looked at the deputies stepping onto the pavement.

""This is an orderly transition,"" I replied. ""I paid two months' upfront rent and security deposit on a modest two-bedroom townhouse across town near the industrial park. The movers will pack every item belonging to you and Sloan from the basement suite today and transport it directly there. The lease is under your name, Caleb. After the two months expire, the rent is entirely your responsibility.""

""A townhouse near the industrial park?"" Sloan choked out between sobs, looking up with red, swollen eyes. ""That neighborhood is awful! It doesn't even have a community pool! How am I supposed to raise my children there?!""

""By working, Sloan,"" I said, looking her directly in the eye without a shred of pity. ""By getting a job, clocking in forty hours a week, and learning what things actually cost. You will no longer live off the sweat of an elderly woman whom you despise. You wanted me out of your life at the resort; now you have your wish permanently.""

Caleb stepped forward, tears finally spilling down his cheeks. He reached out to touch my arm, but one of the deputies stepped smoothly between us, placing a cautionary hand on his duty belt.

""Mom... please,"" Caleb choked out, his arrogance completely shattered. ""I am so sorry. I swear to you, I didn't realize how cruel it was until we were sitting in that awful annex room listening to Richard insult me. I realized that the only person who ever truly protected me, who ever truly loved me without expecting status in return, was you. And I treated you worse than a stranger.""

""You did, Caleb,"" I said softly, the pain in my chest finally surfacing in my eyes. ""You broke my heart. And while I may forgive you as a mother someday, I will never again be your fool. You have sixty days of paid shelter to prove whether you are a man or merely an entitled parasite. The choice is yours.""
