Chapter 3 - Red Carpet To Red Faces

The drive from Denver to the White Birch Lodge took roughly three and a half hours through winding canyons. While Caleb and the Vance clan were ascending the snow-dusted peak, picturing themselves basking in private sauna steam and ordering vintage wine on my tab, I didn't spend my morning sulking. I dressed in warm slacks, pulled on my tailored wool coat, and walked down the stairs to the lower level of my home.

For three long years, I had walked past this basement apartment with averted eyes, tolerating the creeping clutter, the scuffed baseboards, and the persistent disregard for my property. Sloan had insisted on painting the original cedar trim a tacky modern gray. Caleb had stacked empty tech gadget boxes along the hallway until it resembled a warehouse. I had stayed silent to keep the peace. I had accommodated their excuses because Caleb was my only child, born after years of prayers, and I had promised his late father I would always protect him.

But enabling a selfish child is not love; it is cowardice. Standing in their messy living room, looking at their half-eaten breakfast dishes left in the sink for me to wash, I realized that by protecting Caleb from the consequences of his actions, I had turned him into an entitled monster who thought my dignity had a price tag.

I took out my phone, dialed my long-time friend and property attorney, Marcus, and asked him to prepare an official thirty-day notice to quit for residential tenancy. Then, I called a local commercial locksmith.

Meanwhile, three thousand feet higher in the mountains, Caleb’s convoy was pulling under the grand portico of the White Birch Lodge.

The lodge was spectacular, adorned with massive Norwegian pine wreaths, sparkling golden fairy lights, and uniformed bellhops waiting to retrieve luggage from arriving guests. Sloan’s mother, Evelyn Vance, stepped out of the luxury passenger van wrapped in a brand-new white shearling coat—a coat purchased using the supplementary card linked to my bank account. Richard Vance adjusted his polarized designer sunglasses, puffing his chest out as if he were an oil baron arriving at his private compound.

""Make sure they handle my golf bags with care, Caleb!"" Richard bellowed loudly enough for other arriving guests to hear. ""I intend to use the indoor virtual simulators before dinner!""

""Of course, Richard, don't worry about a thing,"" Caleb answered quickly, desperate to maintain the illusion of an affluent, benevolent provider. ""Everything is taken care of. Platinum level.""

Sloan strutted into the grand lobby with her chin held high, holding Leo and Maya by the hands, while Brittany recorded an Instagram story showing off the towering fifty-foot Christmas tree in the center atrium. ""Arrived at our holiday palace! Best Christmas ever! #Blessed #LuxuryLiving #FamilyFirst,"" she captioned the video.

Caleb marched up to the mahogany front desk, where an impeccably dressed guest services manager named Christian stood behind a brass terminal.

""Montgomery party checking in,"" Caleb announced with an arrogant flick of his wrist. ""The Grand Peak Chalet. It’s the presidential reservation.""

Christian smiled warmly, typing the name into his computer. ""Welcome to White Birch, Mr. Montgomery. Let me pull up your booking.""

Sloan and her parents gathered directly behind Caleb, whispering excitedly about the heated outdoor plunge pools. Evelyn was already complaining about the mountain air making her throat dry, demanding that Caleb order complimentary champagne sent directly to her suite.

Christian’s fingers stopped clicking. The warm smile on his face slowly tightened into a practiced, neutral mask. His eyebrows furrowed slightly as he peered closer at the monitor. He tapped several keys, refreshed the screen, and then picked up his desk phone to speak in low, hushed tones to the back-office reservation supervisor.

Caleb leaned over the counter, his confidence cracking slightly around the edges. ""Is there an issue? We've been on the road for hours. My in-laws are exhausted.""

Christian hung up the phone, folded his hands neatly over the desk, and looked Caleb straight in the eye.

""Mr. Montgomery, I show a record of an initial reservation under your name, but as of eight-forty-seven this morning, the booking was officially cancelled by the master account holder, Mrs. Helena Montgomery.""

Sloan gasped behind him. ""Cancelled? That’s impossible! She’s his mother! He is the guest of honor!""

""I’m sorry, ma'am,"" Christian stated with surgical professionalism. ""The reservation was paid through Mrs. Helena Montgomery’s private membership profile. The funds have been returned to her financial institution, and the Grand Peak Chalet has already been re-booked by an executive party arriving from Dallas. You do not have a reservation here.""
