Chapter 6 - The Uninvited Guests

Saturday evening arrived—the night of Michael and Ashley's lavish dinner party.
Clara had secured an invitation for me, not as a family member, but through an ingenious maneuver: Carter Global Holdings was the majority shareholder in the parent company that owned Michael's firm, Horizon Logistics. When Michael's CEO, David Sterling, received a call from Arthur Vance stating that the reclusive principal owner of their holding company wished to attend the private gathering at Michael's home, Sterling was thrilled. He personally informed Michael that a ""distinguished VIP investor"" would be joining them.
At precisely 7:30 PM, a sleek black Maybach pulled into Michael's cul-de-sac.
The street was lined with Mercedes and BMWs belonging to Ashley's wealthy friends. The warm glow of chandeliers poured from the large front windows. Music hummed through the open French doors.
The chauffeur opened my door and lowered the automated ramp. I sat upright in an ultra-modern, carbon-fiber electric wheelchair, wearing an elegant midnight-blue silk gown, my silver hair professionally styled, and Robert's mother's emerald necklace resting proudly against my collarbone. Beside me walked Arthur Vance, dressed in an immaculate bespoke tuxedo, and Clara, holding the executive portfolios.
We moved up the driveway—the exact same driveway I had rolled down four days ago in tears, begging for a spare room.
Arthur reached the front door and pressed the brass bell.
A moment later, the door swung open. Ashley stood there in a floor-length emerald cocktail dress, holding a glass of champagne, her face glowing with manufactured charm. ""Welcome! We are so honored to—""
Her words died in her throat. The color drained from her cheeks until she looked like a ghost. Her champagne flute slipped from her fingers, shattering on the polished entryway marble.
""H-Helen?"" she gasped, stumbling backward.
Behind her, Michael rushed forward, laughing with CEO David Sterling. ""Honey, what broke? Is the VIP here—""
Michael stopped dead in his tracks. His eyes bulged as they landed on me. He looked at my silk dress, the emerald necklace, the towering presence of Arthur Vance at my side, and the two private security officers standing discreetly near the driveway.
""Mom?!"" Michael choked out, his voice cracking like a terrified teenager's. ""What... what is this? What are you doing here?""
David Sterling stepped forward, looking between Michael and me, his eyes wide with utter reverence. ""Michael... you know Mrs. Helen Carter? Why didn't you tell me she was your mother?!""
Sterling extended a hand toward me, bowing slightly. ""Mrs. Carter, what an absolute honor. When Mr. Vance informed us that the majority owner of Carter Global Holdings and our board chairman was visiting, I had no idea you were family to our VP!""
May you like
Michael's jaw hung open. He looked as if all the oxygen had been vacuumed out of the room. ""Majority... owner? Board... chairman?""
""May we come in, Michael?"" I asked, my voice calm, smooth, and echoing through the silent, crowded foyer. ""Or is the guest room still under construction?""
