Chapter 4 - The Legal Net

By Thursday morning, my life was operating on a level of precision I had never dreamed possible. Arthur Vance arrived at my suite accompanied by Evelyn Cross, one of the premier estate and contract attorneys in the state. She was a woman in her fifties with sharp grey eyes, impeccably cut suits, and a reputation for dismantling corrupt corporate executives in court without breaking a sweat.

""Mrs. Carter,"" Evelyn said, shaking my hand warmly. ""Arthur briefed me on the entirety of Robert's legacy and your current domestic situation. First, let me say: you are an extraordinary woman, and what your son did is not just morally reprehensible, it touches upon several financial irregularities we've just uncovered.""

I tilted my head. ""What kind of irregularities?""

Evelyn opened an encrypted tablet and laid out several financial statements. ""Michael is an executive vice president at Horizon Logistics. Over the past three years, he and Ashley have lived far beyond their means. Country club memberships, luxury European vacations, leased sports cars. To maintain this facade, Michael applied for that $420,000 balloon loan from Vanguard Assets. But he didn't qualify on his own income.""

My heart sank. ""How did he get approved then?""

""He forged your signature as a co-guarantor,"" Evelyn said bluntly. ""He used your modest home on Maple Street as secondary collateral without your knowledge or consent. He gambled your shelter to finance his luxury lifestyle, assuming he would receive his annual executive bonus to clear the balloon payment before you ever found out.""

A cold chill washed over me. ""And did he get his bonus?""

""Horizon Logistics announced an internal freeze on all senior bonuses two weeks ago due to supply chain losses,"" Arthur added smoothly. ""Michael is completely underwater. That balloon payment of $350,000 is due on Monday at 5:00 PM. If Vanguard Assets calls the loan, Michael faces immediate foreclosure and potential criminal referral for bank fraud.""

I stared at the paperwork. The signature on the deed of trust was a clumsy imitation of my handwriting. He hadn't just shut the door on my wheelchair; he had staked my very roof, ready to let me end up homeless if his corporate gamble failed.

""What do you want to do, Mrs. Carter?"" Evelyn asked, watching me carefully. ""We can file a criminal fraud complaint with the state prosecutor today. He would be arrested by sunset.""

I looked out the window, watching the white yachts glide smoothly across the blue water. Anger burned inside me, hot and sharp, but underneath it lay a mother's deep, profound sorrow. Michael had forgotten who he was. He had traded his soul for a postal code and a golf membership.

""No criminal charges yet,"" I said softly, my voice cold as winter. ""If he goes to prison, he becomes a martyr in his own mind, blaming me for ruining his life. I want him to see the truth. I want him to look at the empire his father built, and realize exactly what he threw away.""

""And the loan?"" Arthur asked.

""Enforce every single term of the contract,"" I ordered. ""Send the demand letter tomorrow. Due Monday at five o'clock. Not a penny discounted. Not a single day extended.""
