Chapter 8 - The Clean Break

The silence that followed Richard’s hasty departure was absolute.

Winston Sterling sat slouched in his chair, staring at the shattered glass by his feet, looking ten years older than when he had entered the room. Camila was clutching her pearl necklace so tightly her knuckles were white, glaring at me with raw, venomous hatred, but completely paralyzed by the presence of her high-society peers.

Councilman Harrington stood up, buttoning his jacket with stony formality. ""Winston, Camila... I think it’s best if my wife and I take our leave. This is clearly a private matter.""

Within moments, a domino effect swept through the room. Guest after guest murmured hurried apologies, retrieved their coats, and filed out the door. Nathan’s managing director, Mr. Bradley, paused beside Nathan’s chair on his way out.

""Nathan,"" Bradley said coldly, not even looking down at him. ""Take Monday off. Clear your desk by Tuesday morning. Our firm cannot have an associate who practices this brand of financial deceit managing other people's life savings.""

""Mr. Bradley, please—let me explain—"" Nathan stammered, half-rising.

""Goodnight, Nathan."" Bradley walked out, the heavy oak doors closing firmly behind him.

Only the four of us remained: Winston, Camila, Nathan, and me.

Nathan turned to me, his eyes bloodshot, his hands trembling as he reached across the table. ""Elena... please. I was desperate. Dad was going to lose the family estate. The bank was threatening to seize everything. I didn't want to hurt you—I was going to pay you back out of my bonuses over time, I swear to God! I love you, Elena. You can't destroy our entire future over this!""

I looked down at the engagement ring on my left hand: a two-carat diamond in a platinum setting that Camila had repeatedly bragged had been in the Sterling family for generations.

I slid it off my finger.

""A future built on a lie isn't a future, Nathan,"" I said gently. ""It’s a prison sentence. And I've worked too hard for my freedom to surrender it to cowards.""

I placed the ring squarely in the center of the table, on top of Section 4.2 of the prenup.

""What about the wire?"" Nathan whispered, his voice cracking with sheer panic. ""The closing is tomorrow. The escrow hold—""

""The escrow agreement Claire Dubois prepared was conditional upon dual execution of a joint deed,"" I informed him, picking up my leather clutch. ""Since I will not be signing your fraudulent agreement, the escrow automatically dissolved at seven o'clock tonight. My hundred and fifty thousand dollars is safely sitting in my personal account, where it has always belonged.""

Winston closed his eyes, burying his face in his hands with a shuddering groan. The balloon payment would default; their facade was finished.

Camila lunged out of her chair, her face twisted in rage. ""Get out! Get out of here, you wretched—""

Monsieur Laurent stepped smoothly between Camila and me, his tall frame blocking her entirely. He turned to me, bowed with deep, impeccable Parisian courtliness, and spoke in warm, respectful French.

“Madame, votre voiture vous attend à l'entrée. C'était un honneur absolu de vous recevoir. S'il vous plaît, laissez ces gens payer l'addition.”

I smiled at Monsieur Laurent, switching effortlessly back to French. “Merci infiniment, Monsieur Laurent. Le service était impeccable. Bonne soirée.”

I turned on my heel, my silk dress whispering against the polished floor, and walked out of the private dining room without looking back once.
