Chapter 4 - The Phantom Wire

By Thursday morning, the countdown had begun. Nathan arrived at my apartment early, dressed in his tailored charcoal suit, tapping his wingtip shoe against the hardwood floor while I sat at my laptop. His tension was palpable; the slick veneer of the easygoing fiancé had worn thin, replaced by the twitchy urgency of a man facing a looming financial deadline.

""The wire has to be sent from your account before the two o’clock clearing cutoff, Elena,"" he urged, standing behind my chair with his hands resting heavily on my shoulders. ""Dad’s bankers in New York are waiting to confirm receipt so the escrow officer can file the deed.""

I looked up at him, offering a serene, reassuring smile. ""Don't worry, Nathan. Everything is arranged.""

On my screen, I opened a professional banking portal. It wasn't my personal savings account; it was an irrevocable escrow verification interface set up by Claire Dubois. The screen prominently displayed an authorization pending for the exact amount: $150,000.00, earmarked under the reference code STERLING-CLOSING-ESCROW.

Nathan leaned in close, his eyes greedily scanning the six-figure number. ""Can you click authorize now?""

""Already initiated,"" I lied smoothly, clicking a harmless confirmation receipt generator that Claire’s technical team had prepared. A crisp, official-looking confirmation voucher popped up on the screen, bearing the transaction ID and the routing header. ""The funds are reserved in escrow. The bank requires the dual execution of the prenuptial deed before the final release is cleared tomorrow evening. That's standard compliance for transactions over one hundred thousand dollars, right?""

Nathan swallowed hard, staring at the screen. He knew enough banking protocol to recognize that an escrow hold locked the funds, but his desperation blinded him to the underlying legal stipulations. ""Right. Standard compliance. Good. That's... that's fantastic, Elena.""

He let out a long breath, and for a fleeting second, an expression of genuine guilt flickered across his features. He reached down and touched my hair, his fingers slightly trembling. ""You're going to love the house, El. Truly. It’s going to be great.""

""I know,"" I answered calmly. ""I'm sure everyone will get exactly what they deserve.""

He grabbed his briefcase and rushed out to meet his father for a strategy lunch, convinced that their family’s financial emergency was solved. The moment his car pulled away from the curb, I called Claire Dubois.

""Is the documentation locked?"" I asked.

""Everything is airtight, Elena,"" Claire confirmed on the other end of the line. ""The escrow deposit is held strictly under your sole legal identity. Not a single cent can be touched or transferred to Sterling Holdings LLC without your explicit, in-person signature on a deed that grants you fifty percent undivided joint tenancy. If they attempt to execute their one-sided prenup, the escrow automatically terminates and freezes all assets.""

""And the surprise guest?"" I asked.

""Confirmed,"" Claire replied with a low chuckle. ""Monsieur Jean-Luc Laurent, the owner of Le Petit Châtelet, is an old client of my firm. In fact, when he emigrated from Lyon eight years ago, our office handled his commercial lease and investor visas. He is looking forward to greeting the 'distinguished' Sterling family tomorrow evening.""

""Thank you, Claire.""

I hung up the phone and walked into my bedroom. Hanging on the wardrobe door was my dress for the rehearsal dinner: a sleeveless, midnight-blue silk dress cut with impeccable French minimalism, purchased during my final autumn in the 8th arrondissement of Paris. Beside it sat a pair of simple pearl studs.

Camila had told her friends I was a stray dog brought onto their terrace. She believed I was an uneducated, penniless girl who would tremble at the sight of a French menu and grovel for their approval while signing away my life’s labor.

I picked up the manila folder containing the original prenup, the certified state corporate audit of their defaulting debts, and the translated transcripts of Camila and Beatrice’s private conversation. I slipped the folder into a slim leather clutch.

The rehearsal dinner was scheduled for seven o’clock. The stage was set, the actors were in place, and for the first time in fourteen months, I held the director's script.
