Chapter 6 - Eviction Notice

The morning sun broke through the tall leaded glass windows of the Sterling estate, revealing dust motes dancing in the air of a house that had suddenly lost its soul. By eight o'clock, two massive moving vans were parked on the circular gravel driveway, their diesel engines rumbling like a death knell for the family dynasty.
My mother stood in the marble foyer, frantically wrapping antique porcelain figurines in tissue paper while two professional movers waited impassively with hand trucks. Her eyes were rimmed in red, her designer silk robe dragging along the floor.
""You can't take the dining room set, Mary!"" she cried out as I walked into the hall with a clipboard in hand. ""That table was brought over from France by your great-grandfather! It belongs to the Sterling bloodline!""
""Actually, Mom, Father used that exact dining set as collateral on a personal promissory note to a loan shark at the marina last summer,"" I said, flipping a page on the inventory manifest. ""Wade bought the note back to keep the bailiffs from seizing it in front of the neighbors. The table stays with the property.""
Alyssa descended the grand staircase wearing oversized sunglasses and a trench coat, dragging two massive Louis Vuitton suitcases behind her. She looked around the cavernous foyer with bitter, venomous disgust.
""Where are we supposed to go?"" she spat, glaring at me as if the entire universe had conspired against her. ""Every hotel downtown is booked because of the regional real estate convention! And the press is camping out at the front gates! Did you call the paparazzi to come film us getting thrown out into the street?""
""The media doesn't care about your eviction, Alyssa,"" I replied calmly. ""They're waiting outside because the state licensing board released a preliminary statement twenty minutes ago. Your honorary architectural fellowship has been rescinded, and the county district attorney is reviewing your forged credential submissions for the harbor project.""
Alyssa’s hands flew to her mouth, the sunglasses sliding down her nose. ""A criminal investigation? Are you insane? You're going to let them put your own sister in prison?""
""I didn't forge your test scores, Alyssa. You did,"" I said, stepping directly in front of her. ""For eight years, you told everyone at dinner parties that I was just the draftsman—that I lacked the 'executive charisma' to be anything more than a background employee. You took six-figure bonuses based on contracts I drafted, and you spent that money on sports cars, designer dresses, and trips to Aspen while I drove a ten-year-old sedan and paid for my own health insurance.""
""You were family!"" she screamed, her voice cracking into ugly, shrill hysteria. ""Family is supposed to share the burden!""
""Family is supposed to love each other,"" Wade’s voice echoed down from the top of the stairs. He descended with steady, deliberate steps, holding a set of keys in his hand. ""Family doesn't stand up at a charity gala in front of four hundred people and humiliate their youngest daughter to make themselves look superior. Family doesn't steal intellectual property and laugh while treating a brilliant woman like a servant.""
Wade reached the bottom of the stairs and stopped beside me, handing the master keys to the lead property manager waiting by the entrance.
""Arthur,"" Wade called out toward the library door.
My father shuffled out into the hall. He had aged ten years in twenty-four hours. His expensive tailored suit hung loosely on his shrinking frame, his tie missing, his collar open. He looked at Wade with the defeated gaze of a conquered monarch.
""I have arranged a two-bedroom apartment for you and your wife in the western suburbs,"" Wade said evenly. ""The rent is paid for six months from the liquidation of your non-exempt assets. It is clean, modest, and far away from the financial district. If you attempt to contact Mary, attempt to contact the firm's clients, or interfere with the restructuring, the lease will be terminated immediately, and my legal team will proceed with the criminal fraud referrals.""
My father swallowed hard, his Adam's apple bobbing. ""And... and what about Alyssa?""
""Alyssa is thirty-four years old,"" I answered for my husband. ""She has two degrees in communication that she actually earned. She can find a job, rent an apartment, and learn what it feels like to earn a paycheck without my name on the bottom of the blueprints.""
May you like
""I hate you,"" Alyssa whispered, trembling from head to toe, tears finally breaking past her mascara. ""I will never forgive you for this.""
""I didn't ask for your forgiveness,"" I said, stepping aside to clear the path to the front door. ""Now please get out of my house.""
