Chapter 3 - The Boardroom Ambush

By eight-thirty the following morning, the lobby of the Sterling Architectural Building was under siege. Camera crews from three local news affiliates were parked along the sidewalk, chasing every associate who walked through the revolving doors. The headline on the morning social column had been brutal: Billionaire's Secret Bride Unmasked: Sterling Family Scion Left Stranded at the Altar of Vanity.

I walked through the lobby wearing a tailored cream blazer, black trousers, and sunglasses, flanked by Wade and two senior partners from his legal firm. The security guards—men who had ignored me for five years while saluting my sister—jumped to attention and scrambled to hold the private executive elevator open.

When the elevator reached the top floor, the shouting was already audible through the frosted glass doors of the boardroom.

""She has no legal standing!"" Alyssa’s voice shrieked, laced with sheer hysteria. ""I am the Vice President of Marketing and Public Relations! I am the face of this company! You can't let a clerical draftsman hijack our biggest municipal contract!""

Wade pushed the double doors open without knocking.

The room went instantly dead silent. My father was at the head of the table, his tie loosened, looking as if he hadn't slept a wink. Alyssa was pacing near the panoramic windows, her eyes swollen and red despite heavy layers of concealer. Sitting around the long walnut table were the six senior board members, their expressions grim and anxious.

""Mary!"" my father barked, slamming both palms onto the table as he stood up. ""Have you lost your absolute mind? Do you have any idea the reputational damage you caused last night? The phone hasn't stopped ringing! Three major institutional investors are threatening to pull their credit lines!""

""Good morning, Father,"" I said calmly, taking an empty chair near the foot of the table. Wade remained standing directly behind me, towering over the room with cold authority. ""I see you’ve called an emergency meeting. How convenient, since I have a few items to add to the agenda.""

Alyssa stormed over, her pointed acrylic nails trembling as she jabbed them toward my face. ""You jealous, pathetic bitch! You planned this! You knew Wade was the guest of honor, and you seduced him just to tear down everything I built!""

Wade stepped forward by half an inch, his voice dropping into a chilling register. ""Lower your hand, Alyssa. Before I have security remove you from this building for harassment.""

""This is my family's firm!"" Alyssa screamed. ""You can't kick me out!""

""Actually, she can,"" one of our attorneys, Mr. Vance, said smoothly, opening a thick leather briefcase and sliding eight identical bound folders across the polished wood. ""As of six o'clock this morning, Mrs. Mary Larkin—formerly Sterling—exercised her legal right under the late Eleanor Sterling’s trust agreement.""

My father froze. His complexion drained from ruddy to an ashen gray. ""What did you say?""

""My grandmother's will,"" I stated, locking eyes with my father. ""Eleanor always knew what you were, Arthur. She knew you favored vanity over talent. When she died eight years ago, she left thirty-five percent of the voting shares to me, held in escrow until my thirty-fifth birthday or my marriage—whichever came first. You hid that clause from me, didn't you? You told me Grandmother left everything to the family foundation.""

""That... that was an administrative oversight,"" my father stammered, his fingers twitching toward the folders. ""The trust was meant to be managed collectively!""

""It was an act of embezzlement,"" Vance corrected sharply. ""And under Section 4 of the corporate bylaws, when combined with the twelve percent owned by minority shareholders who sold their voting proxies to Larkin Capital at dawn, Mary now controls forty-seven percent of this firm. Wade Larkin controls another ten percent.""

A stunned murmur rippled across the board members.

""Which means,"" I said, leaning forward and resting my chin on my hands, ""effective immediately, the office of Vice President of Marketing is abolished. Alyssa, your keycard has already been deactivated. You have thirty minutes to clear your personal belongings out of the corner office.""

Alyssa looked around the room, wild-eyed, waiting for someone—anyone—to defend her. But the board members simply looked down at their legal briefs, terrified of crossing the billionaire holding their debt notes.

""Daddy!"" Alyssa wailed, grabbing our father's arm. ""Do something! You're the CEO!""

My father stared at me, his chest heaving, trapped between his wounded arrogance and absolute financial ruin. But before he could utter a word, Wade dropped another bomb onto the table.
