Chapter 4 - The Unraveling

Wade didn't raise his voice. He simply tapped a manicured finger against the folder in front of my father.

""Before you try to use your remaining executive privileges, Arthur, you might want to look at page forty-two,"" Wade said quietly. ""Specifically, the forensic balance sheet from the Grand Bahama Development Corporation.""

My father's hands began to shake violently. He pulled the thick paper toward him, his eyes scanning the numbers, and a visible sheen of cold sweat broke out across his forehead.

""Where did you get these?"" my father whispered, his voice cracking like dry wood. ""These are private financial disclosures.""

""Nothing is private when you apply for an eighty-million-dollar municipal bond through my trust,"" Wade replied with effortless precision. ""You used Mary’s architectural blueprints for the harbor revitalization project as collateral. But to make your balance sheet look solvent enough to qualify, you siphoned seven point four million dollars from the employee pension fund and transferred it through shell accounts in Nassau to cover your margin calls.""

The six board members gasped in unison. One elderly director, Mr. Henderson—a man who had been my grandfather’s closest friend—stood up so fast his water glass spilled across the table.

""You did what, Arthur?"" Henderson demanded, his voice shaking with outrage. ""The employee pension fund? My family’s retirement is tied up in that pool! You swore those accounts were ring-fenced!""

""It was a temporary loan!"" my father cried out, looking trapped, his eyes darting toward the exits. ""The returns were guaranteed! The developer promised a twelve percent dividend by the third quarter! I was going to replace every single dollar before the annual audit!""

""The developer fled to Cyprus last Tuesday,"" Wade said coldly. ""The money is gone, Arthur. You didn't just commit corporate mismanagement. You committed wire fraud, pension fraud, and grand larceny. If this folder is handed over to the state attorney general's office, you won't just lose the firm. You'll spend the next fifteen years in federal prison.""

Alyssa dropped onto the leather chair behind her, her jaw hanging open, completely oblivious to the legal disaster her father had created. ""Wait... what about my gala? What about the five-million-dollar donation for my cultural center?""

I looked at my sister with a mixture of pity and utter disgust. Even now, facing total devastation, her only concern was her social status and her vanity project.

""There is no cultural center, Alyssa,"" I said, standing up and closing my folder. ""There is no donation. Wade and I are personally covering the pension deficit so the three hundred draftsmen, engineers, and support staff in this building don't lose their life savings because of Father's reckless greed.""

""You're bailing us out?"" my father asked, a desperate glimmer of hope flickering in his bloodshot eyes. ""Mary... my sweet girl, I knew you wouldn't abandon your family. We can work this out! We can issue a joint statement. You and Wade can take co-chair positions, and we can present a united front to the media!""

""You aren't listening, Arthur,"" I said, refusing to call him Father. ""We are covering the pension fund. We are not covering you. In exchange for Larkin Capital assuming the firm's liabilities and keeping the doors open, you will sign an unconditional resignation letter immediately. You will surrender all remaining equity in the company, forfeit your severance package, and vacate the family estate, which was mortgaged to the hilt to back those offshore accounts.""

""You're kicking me out of my own house?"" my father bellowed, his face turning purple with rage. ""I raised you! I put a roof over your head! I gave you a job when no other firm would take a quiet, antisocial girl like you!""

""You didn't give me a job,"" I fired back, my voice ringing clear and hard throughout the boardroom. ""You used my talent to cover your daughter's incompetence! You stole my intellectual property for a decade while treating me like an unpaid intern! You sat at that gala last night and laughed while Alyssa told four hundred people I was an unwanted leftover! Well, look at where your favorite daughter got you.""

I slid the resignation document directly in front of him, along with a heavy Montblanc pen.

May you like

""Sign it,"" I commanded softly. ""Or Wade calls the federal prosecutor waiting in our lobby.""

My father looked at the pen, then at the grim faces of the board members who had already turned their backs on him. With trembling, humiliated hands, he picked up the pen and pressed the nib to the paper.
