Chapter 8 - The Unmasking of the Moretti Heir

The silence that followed Julian’s announcement was so profound that you could hear the distant jingle of a slot machine echoing from across the gaming floor.

Dante stared at the legal documents in Julian’s hands, his knees buckling slightly as the reality of his total and absolute ruin crashed down upon him. Everything his father had built, everything he had stolen, manipulated, and lied for—gone in a single afternoon.

“No... no, this is impossible,” Dante stammered, grabbing the edges of the portfolio with shaking hands. “You can’t do this! I have political connections! I have syndicate backing! You can’t just foreclose on Moretti Holdings!”

“Syndicate backing?” Julian chuckled darkly, stepping in front of me like a protective wall. “Dante, your syndicate associates sold you out the moment your accounts were frozen. Nobody in Las Vegas is willing to bleed out for a man who lost his entire empire to a woman he spent three years underestimating.”

Althia let out a piercing shriek, rushing forward to grab Dante’s arm. “Dante! Tell him he’s lying! Tell us we’re safe! What about the baby? What about our future? You promised us!”

Dante jerked his arm away from her, his face twisted in sudden, ugly desperation. “Shut up, Althia! Just shut your damn mouth! This is all your fault! You pushed her on me, you helped orchestrate this whole mess, and now look at us! We’re ruined!”

My mother gasped, clutching her chest as if she’d been physically struck. “How dare you! After I gave you my daughter—after we handed you everything on a silver platter!”

Watching them turn on each other like starving wolves in a cage was better than any revenge I could have ever dreamed up. The unbreakable facade of the Bennett-Moretti alliance was shattering into a million jagged pieces right before my eyes.

I stepped forward, breaking the silence with a calm, melodic voice that cut through their frantic shouting.

“You wanted a family legacy, Dante?” I asked softly, tilting my head. “You wanted an heir born of deceit, betrayal, and stolen money? Well, congratulations. You got your baby girl. But you’ll be raising her from a cardboard box on Fremont Street, because every single asset you ever touched now bears my signature.”

Lily began to sob hysterically, burying her face in her hands, rocking back and forth in her wheelchair while the newborn baby cried softly in her arms. My father stood frozen beside them, staring at the floor, completely broken, realizing that forty years of social climbing had culminated in total, public humiliation.

Dante turned slowly, his eyes bloodshot and desperate, fixing his gaze on me. A pathetic, hollow smile crossed his lips as he took a tentative step forward, reaching out a trembling hand. 🌿

“Claire... please,” he whispered, his voice cracking with false humility. “We were husband and wife. We built this together. Can’t we... can’t we work this out? Just the two of us? I was foolish, I was weak, but I still love you, Claire. Please...”

I looked down at his outstretched hand, then slowly raised my eyes to meet his.

“Love me?” I asked, my voice chillingly devoid of emotion. “Dante, the only thing you ever loved was my signature on your corporate ledger. And as of forty minutes ago, that signature has officially been revoked.”
