Chapter 6 - The Unraveling

Two weeks passed. Grand Rapids slid into the crisp, grey days of late October. I threw myself into my work at the pediatric oncology unit, finding deep solace in the real, honest struggles of the children and families I cared for every day. In the hospital corridors, people fought genuine battles for life; the petty, vicious games of the Whitcomb family felt increasingly like a distant, bad dream.

Nolan checked in on me every few days via text. Short, respectful messages ensuring I was safe and asking if my family had tried to contact me at work. He informed me that the emergency annulment had been granted by a circuit judge—because the marriage had not been consummated and had lasted less than twelve hours, coupled with documented evidence of deceit, the union was legally erased. It was as if Tessa had never been married at all.

Then, on a rainy Tuesday afternoon, Nolan called.

""Maren, are you free for dinner tonight?"" he asked. His voice sounded tense, carrying a heavy edge. ""There's something you need to know. It involves your parents.""

We met at a quiet, dimly lit Italian restaurant on the outskirts of Grand Rapids. Nolan looked tired, but remarkably composed. When the waiter brought our tea, Nolan placed a thick manila folder on the table between us.

""My corporate security team did a deep dive into the resort incident,"" Nolan explained, keeping his voice low. ""I wanted to make sure Tessa couldn't file any retaliatory lawsuits claiming breach of contract or emotional distress. But when my investigators pulled the resort's external surveillance footage from the pool deck, they found something else.""

He opened the folder and slid two color still-frames across the table.

The first photo was taken five minutes before I fell into the pool. It showed Tessa standing near the bar, talking intently to our father. In the frame, Tessa was holding up her smartphone, pointing at the screen, and laughing while Dad nodded and gave her a high-five.

""We subpoenaed Tessa’s phone records through the annulment discovery process,"" Nolan said. ""Do you know what she was showing your father?""

I shook my head, my stomach tightening into a knot.

""A group chat between Tessa and her four bridesmaids,"" Nolan stated, his jaw clenching. ""The message she sent at 9:45 PM read: 'Watch this, I'm going to throw the wet blanket into the deep end and see if she actually sinks this time. Have your cameras ready.'""

My breath hitched. It hadn't been an impulse. It hadn't been a drunken accident.

""It was premeditated,"" I whispered.

""It gets worse,"" Nolan continued, tapping the second document in the folder. ""When my firm canceled the master account at the resort, your father tried to use a business line of credit to pay the thirty-four-thousand-dollar balance. That business credit card was tied to a commercial construction loan that my engineering firm had partnered on with your father's contracting company six months ago.""

I stared at him. ""My dad had business with you?""

""That's how I met Tessa in the first place, Maren,"" Nolan said with a cold, humorless chuckle. ""Philip introduced us at a charity gala. He pushed Tessa toward me relentlessly. I thought it was just an eager father who wanted to see his daughter well-settled. But my forensic accountants reviewed the project books yesterday. Philip has been embezzling funds from our joint infrastructure project for over a year to fund Tessa’s lavish lifestyle, her designer wardrobe, and that entire extravagant wedding.""

The room seemed to spin. ""My father stole from you?""

May you like

""Close to four hundred thousand dollars,"" Nolan said calmly. ""He thought that once I was his son-in-law, family loyalty would prevent me from ever auditing the books. He banked on me protecting the family name.""

Nolan leaned back in his chair, folding his hands. ""He banked wrong.""
