Chapter 2 - The Mask Slips

The bridal suite on the fourth floor was a sprawling expanse of white marble, vaulted ceilings, and floor-to-ceiling glass doors overlooking the Traverse City bay. Hours earlier, it had been filled with bridesmaids sipping mimosas, hair stylists curling blonde extensions, and laughter that sounded like shattered glass. Now, the quiet inside felt like a vacuum.
Nolan led me into the massive master bathroom, turned the brass shower handles to steaming hot, and pulled three oversized plush towels from the heated warmer. He handed them to me, stepped outside, and shut the heavy oak door without a word.
""Take your time,"" his voice came through the wood, steady and calm. ""There are clean hotel robes in the closet. Warm up.""
I stripped out of the ruined emerald maid-of-honor dress, dropping it into an sodden pile on the heated tiles. Standing beneath the scalding water, I finally let myself cry. I didn't cry because I had almost drowned; I cried because of the realization that my life had been spent walking on eggshells for monsters who would have happily watched me sink to the bottom of the world if it meant their dinner wasn't delayed.
When I emerged twenty minutes later, bundled in a thick terrycloth robe with my hair wrapped in a towel, the scene in the living area had erupted into war.
Tessa had stormed into the room, flanked by Mom and Dad. She was red-faced, pacing the hardwood floor like a caged panther, clutching a half-empty champagne flute.
""You humiliated me down there!"" Tessa screamed at Nolan, who was calmly sitting at the mahogany writing desk, tapping something into his phone. ""My bridesmaids saw you walk away with her! My college friends saw! Do you have any idea what people are whispering? They think there's something wrong with us!""
""There is something wrong with us,"" Nolan answered without looking up from his screen. ""Namely, that I didn't hire a background investigator before I gave you a ring.""
Mom stepped forward, her maternal indignation dialed to maximum volume. ""Nolan Pierce, that is enough! You are speaking to your wife! Tessa comes from a respectable family, and we will not allow you to speak to her as if she’s a criminal over some harmless family tease!""
""Harmless?"" Nolan finally looked up. His face was entirely devoid of warmth. ""Your daughter shoved an adult woman who cannot swim into deep water from behind, on wet concrete, where a slip could have broken her skull. Then she stood there and laughed while strangers risked their lives jumping in fully clothed. If this resort had security footage—which, by the way, they do—it’s not a prank. It’s aggravated assault.""
Dad sneered, waving his hands defensively. ""Assault? Don't be ridiculous! She's her sister! Families mess with each other. When Tessa was twelve, she pushed Maren off the treehouse into a snowbank. It builds character! Maren has always been soft, Nolan. You don't know the full history.""
""I know enough,"" Nolan said. He stood up, towering over my father. Dad instinctively took half a step back. ""I grew up in foster homes until I was eleven, Philip. I know what an abusive bully looks like. I know the sound of a person who hurts someone smaller than them because it gives them a cheap thrill, and I know the sickening excuses enablers make to protect them.""
Tessa laughed, an ugly, grating sound. ""Foster homes? Are you really bringing up your sad little orphan sob story right now? I married you because you were supposed to be successful and classy, Nolan! Not some bleeding-heart wimp who cries over spilled pool water! Maren is fine! Look at her! She’s standing right there!""
Nolan looked past Tessa and met my eyes. The fury in his expression instantly softened into quiet sorrow.
""Maren,"" he said gently, ""pack your things. Everything you brought with you for the weekend.""
May you like
""Why the hell should she pack?"" Tessa demanded, stepping into his path. ""This is my wedding block! I paid for these rooms!""
Nolan opened his leather wallet, pulled out a black credit card, and slid it across the marble counter. ""No, Tessa. My firm paid the master bill for this entire resort three weeks ago. Every flower, every plate of salmon, every drop of wine. And starting at sunrise, the reservation under the name Pierce is being canceled.""
