Chapter 6 - Cleaning House

Stepping into the corner executive office of Sterling Worldwide Logistics was like entering the inner sanctum of a modern kingdom. Floor-to-ceiling windows offered a panoramic 360-degree view of the metropolitan skyline, the river glistening under the crisp autumn sun far below.
Lily sat happily on a plush leather sofa, swinging her little legs while Grandma’s assistant, a kind-faced woman named Margaret, brought her a porcelain mug overflowing with whipped cream and mini marshmallows.
Grandma sat behind the massive executive desk, sliding a stack of thick leather binders toward me. Alongside her sat Marcus Vance, the lead attorney, his expression sharp and intensely focused.
""Julian,"" Marcus began, opening the first binder. ""Before we discuss long-term strategy, you need to understand the immediate state of your authority. Under the terms of the trust, you are the designated Legal Custodian and Managing Director of the family assets until Lily turns twenty-five. You hold absolute veto power over board appointments, corporate real estate, and private capital distribution.""
""I don't care about the power, Marcus,"" I said honestly, sitting down across from them. ""I just want to ensure Lily has safety, education, and peace. I want to make sure no one can ever look down on her again.""
""Power and protection are two sides of the same coin in this world, Julian,"" Grandma noted softly, leaning forward. ""If you do not wield the hammer, people like your father and sister will use it to break you. Now, look at these balance sheets.""
For the next four hours, Marcus and Grandma walked me through the tangled web of family finances. What I discovered turned my stomach.
Over the last five years, Arthur had siphoned millions of dollars into vanity projects to keep Vanessa in the upper echelons of high society. There were receipts for five-figure designer gowns billed under 'promotional expenses,' chartered private jets to European fashion weeks listed as 'client relations,' and massive country club tabs paid directly out of the operations budget. Even worse, Arthur had quietly mortgaged the ancestral family estate—the very house where last night’s disastrous dinner had occurred—to cover high-risk derivatives trading debts that had recently gone sour.
""He was months away from bankrupting the private family trust entirely,"" Grandma revealed, her eyes burning with cold anger. ""He was floating loans against company assets to maintain the illusion of wealth. If we hadn't stepped in last night, this entire empire would have collapsed into receivership within a year.""
""And the house?"" I asked. ""The main estate?""
""The deed was transferred into the trust three weeks ago,"" Marcus replied with a thin smile. ""Arthur doesn't own it. Vanessa doesn't own it. The house belongs entirely to the Lily Clara Sterling Trust. In fact, under the terms of the eviction notice I drafted this morning, Arthur and Evelyn have forty-eight hours to vacate the premises.""
I looked across the room at Lily, who was busily drawing a picture on a piece of corporate stationery with colored pencils Margaret had found for her. She had drawn three figures: a tall man, a little girl in a blue dress, and an angel with a golden halo hovering in the clouds above them.

""Give them seven days to pack,"" I said quietly, looking back at Marcus. ""I don't want them on the street, and I won't be petty like they were. Let them keep their personal clothes and furniture. But the luxury vehicles leased through the company, the private club memberships, and the expense accounts end today.""
Grandma reached across the desk and placed her hand over mine. ""You have Clara’s heart, Julian. Just make sure you keep your own backbone.""
