Chapter 4 - The Boardroom Ambush

At exactly 7:55 AM, the low purr of an engine signaled the arrival of a sleek black Maybach outside our modest duplex. The neighbors peeked through their blinds, utterly bewildered to see a uniformed chauffeur step onto our cracked concrete sidewalk, opening the rear door with crisp military precision.
Lily held my hand tightly, wearing her favorite bright yellow winter coat. She looked at the luxurious leather interior with wide, astonished eyes. ""Daddy, is this car from a movie?""
""It’s our ride for the day, sweetie,"" I smiled, lifting her into the plush seat.
Our destination was not the family home, but the monolithic glass skyscraper in the heart of the financial district: the headquarters of Sterling Worldwide Logistics. As the private elevator shot smoothly up to the sixty-fourth floor, my heart hammered against my ribs. I had been banished from this building seven years ago when I refused to sign a fraudulent tax shelter document Arthur had slid across my desk.
The elevator doors slid open into the executive suite, revealing a scene of utter chaos.
My father, his face pale and eyes ringed with dark circles, was pacing near the double mahogany doors of the boardroom. Beside him stood Vanessa, wearing an oversized pair of designer sunglasses to hide her puffy, crying eyes, clutching a steaming coffee cup like a weapon. Flanking them were three corporate attorneys carrying thick leather briefcases, whispering frantically in low, agitated huddles.
When the elevator doors parted and I stepped out holding Lily’s hand, the entire corridor went dead silent.
""Julian!"" my father shouted, marching toward us, his voice echoing off the marble floor. ""Thank God you're here. We can fix this before the nine o'clock market opening. The lawyers have already drafted an emergency revocation clause citing undue influence due to Grandma's age. All you have to do is decline the appointment as Lily's conservator and assign power of attorney to me. We’ll establish a five-million-dollar trust fund for Lily immediately. Cash! You'll never have to work another day in your life!""
Vanessa rushed forward, dropping to her knees in front of Lily, her smile so fake and desperate it bordered on grotesque.
""Hi, Lily-bug!"" Vanessa squealed, reaching out to touch Lily's coat. ""Remember Auntie Vanessa? Remember how much fun we always have? Look, Auntie was just teasing last night! Don't you want Auntie to take you shopping? We can go to the biggest toy store in the city and buy you twenty princess dresses! Any dress you want! Just tell your daddy to listen to Grandpa, okay?""
Lily shrank back instantly, burying her face into my trousers. ""Daddy, tell her to stop. Her face looks scary.""
Vanessa froze, her smile shattering into pure fury.
""You little ungrateful—"" Vanessa hissed under her breath before catching herself.
Before another word could be spoken, the boardroom doors swung open wide. Grandma Evelyn emerged, flanked by Marcus Vance, her longtime chief counsel, and four security officers dressed in sharp black suits.
""Arthur,"" Grandma's voice cut through the air like a razor. ""You have exactly five minutes to clear your personal belongings out of the executive suite. Security will oversee your departure to ensure no corporate intellectual property leaves the premises.""
May you like
Arthur looked as if he had been struck by lightning. ""What? Evelyn, you can't remove me! I am the Chief Executive Officer!""
""You were the Chief Executive Officer,"" Grandma corrected calmly. ""Until thirty minutes ago, when the newly assigned trust representatives, acting on behalf of the majority shareholder—Lily Clara Sterling—exercised their legal prerogative to remove you for gross financial negligence and misuse of corporate discretionary funds. The board voted nine to one. You are officially terminated.""
