Chapter 8 - The Desperate Ambush

Two weeks after Travis vanished, Melissa made her final, desperate move. She knew that text messages and phone calls were useless because I had permanently blocked her number and restricted her social media accounts. So, she resorted to an ambush.

It was a blistering Tuesday afternoon in July. The Arizona temperature hovered around one hundred and eight degrees as I walked out of the hospital main entrance carrying my work bag and car keys. As I approached my sedan in the employee parking structure, a figure stepped out from behind a concrete pillar.

It was Melissa.

She looked ten years older than she had at Mom’s birthday dinner. Her hair was pulled back into a messy, unwashed bun, she wore an oversized faded t-shirt, and her eyes were sunken with dark purple rings beneath them. She had clearly waited by my car for hours in the desert heat.

""Emily, please don't run away,"" she pleaded, holding her hands up defensively. ""Please. Just give me five minutes. That’s all I'm asking for.""

I kept my distance, placing my hand firmly on my car door handle. ""You have two minutes, Melissa. And if you take one step closer to me, I'm calling hospital security.""

A look of humiliation flashed across her face, but she swallowed her pride, tears immediately welling in her eyes. ""Emily, Travis is gone. He stole Mom’s money and left. Mom can't afford to keep us anymore. She’s threatening to sell the house and move into an assisted living community because she can't handle the stress.""

""That sounds like a sensible decision for Mom,"" I said coldly.

""No, you don't understand!"" Melissa sobbed, taking a half-step forward before stopping herself. ""If she sells the house, Caleb and I literally have nowhere to go! We're going to a homeless shelter! I went on three job interviews this week, but they only pay minimum wage. I can't afford rent, a security deposit, and utilities on my own. I know I was awful to you. I know what I said at dinner was disgusting and evil. But please, Emily... don't punish Caleb for my stupidity. Just loan me three thousand dollars for a move-in deposit. I will sign a legal contract. I will pay you back fifty dollars every week!""

I looked at my older sister. For years, she had manipulated me by weaponizing Caleb and exploiting my deepest fears of being a bad sister. But the fog had completely cleared.

""Melissa, you had eleven months of free rent to get a job, save money, and build a stable life for Caleb,"" I said, my voice steady, firm, and entirely devoid of pity. ""Instead, you spent sixteen thousand dollars of my money on Vegas trips, fancy clothes, and feeding a deadbeat who abandoned you the second the cash ran dry. You didn't care about Caleb's future when you were laughing about how stupid I was. You only care now because the free ride is completely over.""

""I was stupid!"" she cried, dropping her head into her hands. ""I was an idiot! Please, Emily, have mercy on me!""

May you like

""I already had mercy on you for eleven months,"" I replied, opening my car door and stepping inside. ""Now, it's time for you to learn what being an adult actually feels like.""

I started the engine, rolled up the windows, and pulled out of the parking space, leaving Melissa standing alone in the suffocating heat of the concrete garage.
