Chapter 4 - The Truth Unveiled

Melissa froze on the porch floor. Her theatrical crying stopped instantly, cut off like a severed wire. She blinked up at me through the screen, her eyes narrowing as the color drained completely from her face.

""What... what are you talking about?"" she stammered, her voice suddenly losing its dramatic rasp.

""Mom's birthday dinner,"" I said, leaning in slightly so she could hear every single syllable clearly. ""The kitchen archway. The water pitcher.""

Travis stepped back, his eyes widening in pure horror as realization dawned on him. Melissa’s mouth opened, but no sound came out.

""I stood by the sink for two full minutes,"" I continued, keeping my tone quiet, deliberate, and razor-sharp. ""I heard Travis ask why I was still paying your rent after almost a year. And I heard your exact words, Melissa. 'She’s too stupid to know we’re using her. She has no husband, no kids, and loves being the responsible martyr. Let her feel important while we use her money for Vegas.'""

The porch was dead silent, save for the distant hum of the freeway and the frantic buzzing of moths against the outdoor light.

""Emily... I didn't mean it like that,"" Melissa scrambled to her feet, clutching the screen door handle frantically. ""I was drinking wine! I was just joking around, trying to make Travis feel comfortable! You know how I get when I ramble! It was a stupid joke!""

""A sixteen-thousand-dollar joke?"" I asked, raising an eyebrow. ""You took money I spent thirty-six-hour weekend shifts earning, laughed at my loneliness, bragged about exploiting me to your mother, and then used the cash to take your freeloader boyfriend to Nevada. And you actually thought I would keep writing checks for you?""

""I am your sister!"" she shrieked, dropping the apology act entirely as her desperation turned into venomous rage. ""Family helps family! Who cares what I said at a private dinner? You have the money! You're hoarding it in your bank account while Caleb might end up sleeping in a car! How can you be so disgusting and selfish over words?!""

""The bank of Emily is permanently closed,"" I said. ""And every single dollar in my account belongs to my future, not your luxury vacations.""

""You selfish, vindictive bitch!"" Travis roared, lunging toward the door as if he wanted to tear the screen off its hinges. ""If Caleb ends up on the street, it's on your head! We will tell everyone in the family what kind of monster you really are!""

""Go right ahead,"" I said, looking Travis dead in the eye. ""And while you're telling them, be sure to explain why a thirty-eight-year-old man can't pay fifteen hundred dollars for his own girlfriend's apartment. Now get off my property before I dial nine-one-one and have the Mesa police escort you away for trespassing.""

Travis pulled Melissa's arm. ""Come on, Mel. Let's go. She's a cold-hearted psycho.""

Melissa glared at me with pure hatred burning in her eyes. ""You will regret this, Emily! If we lose that place, Mom will never forgive you! I will make sure the whole family knows what you did to us!""

I didn't answer. I reached forward, pushed the heavy wooden front door shut, and turned the deadbolt until it clicked firmly into place. Through the peephole, I watched them storm down the concrete walkway, cursing loudly into the warm night air before speeding away in Travis's truck. My hands were shaking, not from fear, but from the sudden, intoxicating rush of total liberation. For the first time in thirty-one years, I had stood my ground.
