Chapter 4 - The Bodycam Leak

The audio recording was explosive. It demolished the self-defense lie within seconds. Kayla hadn’t stumbled; she had verbally premeditated the strike, uttered a direct threat, and my mother had actively instructed her to destroy evidence right in the middle of the chaos.
Ethan grabbed his coat. “I’m taking this straight to the county prosecutor’s office. No more playing by family rules.”
Before Ethan could reach the door, a knock echoed through the room. Detective Alvarez stepped inside once more, but this time she wasn't alone. Behind her stood two uniformed deputies and an Assistant District Attorney named Marcus Vance—no relation to Ethan, but known throughout the county as a relentless prosecutor who specialized in felony domestic abuse.
“Mr. and Mrs. Vance,” ADA Marcus Vance began, stepping forward with a crisp file folder. “We’ve received the computer access logs from Dr. Morrison’s medical facility. That alone gave us sufficient probable cause for a search warrant of your mother’s residence in Oakridge. What we didn't expect was what our patrol officers encountered when they served that warrant two hours ago.”
Detective Alvarez took out a thumb drive and inserted it into Ethan’s laptop. “Officer Jenkins and Officer Ramirez were wearing active body-worn cameras when they knocked on Evelyn Ward’s door. We want you to see this before the local media gets hold of it, because someone in your mother’s neighborhood called the local news station the moment five squad cars pulled up to the driveway.”
The video began playing on the laptop screen. The wide-angle lens showed the manicured front lawn of my mother’s four-bedroom home. Officer Jenkins knocked firmly on the front door. After a long minute, my mother opened it, wearing silk loungewear and holding a glass of white wine.
“Can I help you, officers?” Evelyn asked, her tone smooth and arrogant. “If this is about my daughter Claire’s hysterical phone calls, I already explained to your sergeant that this is a private domestic matter.”
“Ma’am, we have a warrant signed by Judge Harrison to seize all digital devices, computers, and footwear belonging to Kayla Ward,” Officer Jenkins stated, presenting the legal paperwork.
The camera caught the instant panic that flickered across my mother’s face before her expression morphed into a snarling sneer. “This is harassment! My brother sits on the municipal planning board! You cannot enter my house based on the fabrications of an emotionally unstable woman who couldn't even keep her own pregnancy safe!”
From behind my mother, Kayla appeared in the foyer. She was packing a large designer suitcase, her passport resting on the entryway table beside a stack of hundred-dollar bills. When she saw the uniformed officers, she didn't show remorse, shame, or regret. Instead, she shrieked like a cornered animal.
“Mom, tell them to get out!” Kayla screamed on the bodycam footage. “I have a flight to Cabo in three hours! Claire is doing this on purpose because she knows everyone felt sorry for her! She faked that fall! She threw herself onto the floor so Ethan wouldn't leave her when he saw the ultrasound!”
“Ma’am, step away from the luggage and put your hands behind your back,” Officer Jenkins ordered, stepping over the threshold.
What happened next sealed Kayla’s fate forever. Rather than complying, Kayla lunged forward, grabbing a heavy brass umbrella stand from the corner, and swung it directly at Officer Ramirez’s head. The metal struck the officer’s shoulder, tearing his uniform shirt. Within seconds, both officers wrestled Kayla to the hardwood floor, pinning her wrists behind her back as the metal handcuffs clicked into place.
While Kayla was screaming obscenities into the floorboards, my mother made her fatal mistake. On camera, she rushed toward Officer Jenkins, grabbing his service belt while screaming, “Don't you touch her! I paid the venue manager five thousand dollars to wipe that security footage, and you have no right to touch my daughter!”

The screen froze as Detective Alvarez paused the video. Ethan and I stared in absolute disbelief. In her narcissistic panic, my mother had just confessed on high-definition, audio-enabled police bodycam to bribing a witness and destroying evidence in a felony assault investigation.
“Both Kayla and Evelyn Ward are currently in holding cells at the central county jail,” ADA Marcus Vance stated coldly. “Kayla is facing charges of aggravated battery against an unborn child, felony assault on a peace officer, and resisting arrest with violence. Evelyn is facing felony witness tampering, obstruction of justice, bribery, and criminal conspiracy. There will be no bail reduction hearings approved this week.”
