Chapter 1 - The Hollow Crib

The sterile smell of antiseptic burned the back of my throat as Ethan gripped my trembling fingers. His eyes were bloodshot, his knuckles white against the metal hospital rail. When he whispered, “She’s alive, Claire. Lily’s alive,” the crushing weight on my chest lifted for a fraction of a second, only to return twice as heavy when his jaw trembled. He couldn't meet my gaze. “She’s in the Level IV NICU,” he added, his voice breaking into a ragged whisper. “The trauma caused a complete placental abruption. They had to perform an emergency vertical c-section to pull her out before she suffocated. Claire, she lost oxygen. They have her on total body cooling, wrapped in hypothermia pads to stop the swelling in her brain. They don't know if she'll ever wake up.”
A suffocating scream lodged deep inside my throat. I tore at the thin hospital blanket, desperate to rip out the intravenous lines and drag my bruised, stitched body toward the neonatal intensive care unit. But the sharp agony in my lower abdomen held me pinned against the mattress. The pointed heel of Kayla’s stiletto had torn through muscle and tissue, striking with enough direct force to fracture my lower abdominal wall and tear the placenta straight from the uterine lining. The physical pain was blinding, but the mental image of my baby fighting for her life in a plastic chamber was unbearable.
“Where is Kayla?” I rasped, the taste of metallic blood lingering on my tongue. “Where is my mother?”
Ethan’s face hardened into a mask of pure, murderous rage. He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out his phone, holding it so I could see the screen. “Your mother didn’t come to the hospital. Neither of them did. Half an hour after the ambulance pulled away from the venue, your mother posted this on her public Facebook page.”
I stared at the screen through swimming tears. My mother had uploaded a polished portrait of Kayla, complete with a sickening caption: Please send your prayers to my youngest daughter, Kayla. A terrible misunderstanding occurred at the baby shower today when Claire lost her temper and tripped over her own feet. Kayla tried to catch her and is now suffering severe emotional shock and trauma from the cruel accusations. Family stands together against false slander. God knows the truth. Beneath the post, dozens of distant relatives and church acquaintances had commented, offering sympathy to Kayla while condemning me for causing a scene while pregnant.
Before I could even process the sheer wickedness of the post, the heavy wooden door of my hospital room pushed open. Two police officers stepped inside, accompanied by a woman wearing a sharp navy suit with a county badge clipped to her lapel. Detective Alvarez from the special victims and domestic violence division introduced herself, her expression grave and strictly business.
“Mrs. Vance, we need to take your official statement regarding the aggravated assault at the floral banquet hall,” Detective Alvarez stated, opening a leather-bound notepad. “When our officers arrived at the scene, your mother, Evelyn Ward, claimed that you suffered an accidental fall after attempting to physically attack your sister over a family disagreement. She claims Kayla acted in pure self-defense.”
A bitter, hysterical laugh tore from my chest. “Self-defense? I was thirty-two weeks pregnant. My sister stood up with a stolen medical scan, broadcast my baby’s private health records over a microphone, and kicked me directly in the stomach with a three-inch stiletto while forty people watched.”

“We understand that there are conflicting narratives,” the detective replied evenly. “However, when officers asked the guests at the venue to submit formal written statements, your mother told everyone that family business should be handled privately, and several relatives left before giving accounts. Furthermore, your mother stated that the venue’s surveillance cameras were turned off for private events. We need every single detail you can provide from the moment you walked into that room.”
Looking into the detective’s watchful eyes, I realized the cold reality. My mother wasn't just shielding Kayla from public embarrassment anymore. She was actively constructing an alternate reality to keep her golden child out of state prison, completely indifferent to the fact that her granddaughter was currently hooked to life support three floors above us. I cleared my throat, ignored the tearing sensation along my fresh incision, and began to recount every single second of the calculated attack.
