Chapter 5 - The Confession by Firelight

The firelight danced across Virgil’s chiseled jaw, illuminating the small smudge of berry lipstick that still lingered at the corner of his mouth.

He walked slowly toward me, his heavy steps silent on the braided wool rug, until he stood inches away in the warm glow of the hearth.

He didn't say a word; he simply reached out his large, calloused hand and gently tucked a damp curl of dark hair behind my ear.

“You asked me what changed in that elevator, Clara,” Virgil whispered, his deep voice thick with raw, unvarnished emotion.

“Nothing changed. What I felt when you kissed me tonight is what I’ve felt every single morning for six years.”

Tears gathered at the edges of my vision, but I held my chin high, refusing to let them spill over my cheeks.

“Then why did you deny it, Virgil?

Why look me in the eyes and tell me you didn't remember the only honest thing that ever happened between us?”

Virgil closed his eyes, a deep, shuddering breath escaping his chest as if releasing an unbearable weight.

“Because in my world, Clara, everything I love becomes a target for men who carry knives in the dark,” he answered softly.

“My mother was executed in her own car when I was twelve years old because my father made the mistake of showing the five families she was his weakness.”

He took my hands into his, his skin warm and rough against my freezing fingers, pressing them gently against his chest where his heart hammered.

“I swore on her grave that I would never bring that curse onto another woman’s shoulders,” Virgil confessed, opening his eyes to look straight into my soul.

“Every time you stayed late to finish a report, every time you smiled across a crowded restaurant, I wanted to pull you into my arms and tell you to leave this city.

I kept you at arm’s length because I thought coldness was the only armor I could give you.”

“Armor doesn't keep you warm, Virgil,” I said, a single tear finally breaking free and tracing down my cheek.

“I spent six years watching you carry the weight of an entire syndicate on your shoulders, watching you bleed for men who didn't deserve your loyalty.

I didn't want your armor; I wanted your truth.”

Virgil lifted his other hand, his thumb gently catching the tear on my cheek, wiping it away with reverence.

“You have it now, Clara,” he murmured, leaning down until his lips hovered a fraction of an inch from mine.

“I love you. More than the casinos, more than the docks, more than my own life.

And if we survive tomorrow morning, I will spend the rest of my days proving it to you outside of this darkness.”

He closed the distance, pressing his lips to mine with a fierce, desperate tenderness that erased six years of silence in a single heartbeat.

The kiss was deep, hot, and full of promises that had survived gunshots, betrayal, and cold ocean spray.

When he finally pulled back, resting his forehead against mine, I pulled the encrypted drive from my pocket and pressed it into his palm.

“Let’s go take back what belongs to us, Mr. Dunore,” I said with a fierce, defiant smile.
