Chapter 4 - The Board Meets at Midnight

At 11:45 PM on Christmas Eve, a secure video conference lit up the monitors of seven prominent figures scattered across New York, Boston, and Toronto. These were the senior trustees of the Julian Graham Foundation and the primary board members of Graham Logistics. They were old money, seasoned industrial titans, and former federal judges who had built the rust-belt shipping corridors alongside Hannah’s father.
When Hannah’s face appeared on their screens, there was a collective murmur of shock. She was sitting in her father’s leather wingback chair, wearing a simple black maternity dress, her hair pulled back into a severe chignon, looking every bit the fierce, calculating heiress Julian had raised.
“Gentlemen, ladies, thank you for waking on a holiday eve,” Hannah began without a single word of introductory pleasantries. “I apologize for the late hour, but an immediate financial catastrophe requires an emergency vote under Article 9 of the corporate charter.”
Arthur Vance, an eighty-two-year-old retired judge and Julian’s oldest confidant, leaned into his webcam, his bushy white eyebrows knit in deep concern. “Hannah, my dear, you look exhausted. Where is Derek? Why isn't your operating director presenting this?”
Hannah didn't blink. With a single click of her mouse, she shared her screen.
Instantly, the monitors of all seven board members filled with forensic bank statements, shell company incorporation papers, and the private jet manifest showing Derek Harper and Alexis Warren currently cruising at 40,000 feet en route to an ultra-luxury ski chalet in Aspen.
“My husband is currently thirty minutes outside of Denver,” Hannah stated, her voice devoid of emotion. “He claimed he was traveling to Harrisburg to reconcile an emergency freight shortage. In reality, he has embezzled fourteen million three hundred thousand dollars from Graham Logistics operating reserves over the last eighteen months. He has funneled these assets through an offshore conduit managed by Ms. Alexis Warren, with whom he has been conducting a clandestine relationship.”
A collective gasp echoed across the digital call.
“My God,” whispered Vance, his face draining of color as he scanned the authenticated wire transfers. “The signature authorizations... he forged your cryptographic digital token?”
“He did,” Hannah confirmed. “Furthermore, he has established a fraudulent identity under the alias Matthew Garrett, secured an unauthorized Swiss bank account, and was preparing to abandon the company, this estate, and our children upon the delivery of my son next month. Under Section 14, Paragraph C of my father’s founding trust agreement, any officer who engages in grand larceny against the family trust is subject to immediate summary termination without notice, severance, or indemnification.”
She paused, taking a slow, measured breath to steady the dull ache beginning to tighten across her lower back. A slight contraction—mild, but noticeable. She pushed through the pain.
“I am formally moving for the immediate removal of Derek Harper as Operating Director and CEO of Graham Logistics and all affiliated entities. I am also moving to invoke the emergency family succession clause, reinstalling myself as sole Chairwoman and Chief Executive Officer with total unilateral signing authority.”
For three seconds, the call was dead silent. Then Arthur Vance slammed his fist against his mahogany desk in Manhattan.
“I second the motion,” Vance declared, his voice trembling with righteous fury. “Julian brought that boy in from the docks. Julian gave him a name, a tailor, and an empire, and this is how he repays the family? I vote aye.”
“Aye,” voted Evelyn Montgomery from Boston.
“Aye,” said Marcus Sterling from Toronto.
Within ninety seconds, the vote was unanimous. Derek Harper had been stripped of every ounce of power, every title, and every executive privilege he had spent twenty years acquiring.
“The board’s certified decree is being uploaded to the federal depository right now,” Julie Nelson announced, her face appearing in a side-channel window. “Hannah, it's done. Derek Harper is officially an outlaw to the Graham estate.”

Hannah looked at the clock on the wall. It was precisely 12:02 AM.
Christmas Day had arrived. And the reckoning had just begun.
